Started my annual lopping 4 ft of the 11 conifers in the back garden today( usually do it jan / feb ) but have had no time this year hence the later lopping .I had noticed a couple of pigeons knocking around the garden but did'nt think they had chosing the conifers to nest

Managed to do the first ten no bother but got to the last one only to find a woodys nest with one egg in so i have decided to leave that tree and let them nest in peace

so anybody seeing one odd conifer in Tyne Wear area knows the reason why

Mind you i am not that sentimental as i am off work next week and hope to do some decoying !!

My old man has shot thousands of pigeons in his time , but still puts peanuts and seeds on his bird table, and for a while had five woodpigeons coming almost everyday. I shot a field not far from his house and shot a pigeon with a full crop of peanuts , well at least i knew were he had breakfast.

Look, at the end of the day we shoot for a purpose. Many of us shoot for different purposes (legal under the general licence or not) but we all shoot or kill vermin for different reasons. I'm quite happy to see half a dozen woodies in my garden eating the bird food. There not damaging any crops there. It's when they are hammering the farmers crops that they become a problem and I will more than happily shoot them.

Shooting a woodie in the garden just for the sake of it because it's there is slightly pointless just because it's on the vermin list. If it's doing damage fine but in my opinion there is no harm in leaving it for another day.

Also apart from certain birds on the general licence where you are killing for a purpose, isn't it illegal to disturb wild bird nests anyway.

Fair play Rayo. :good:

another top answer from fm :sly: .

it's very similar to the "when is a pest , a pest" thread , it's quite often the location that is the problem rather than the animal.

the odd pigeon in your garden does no harm , but , 2000 pigeons on a field of rape are trouble .

it's all about pest control , not pest eradication.

well done rayo
