southernlad
Depends what you consider a big fish... The biggest ever trout I caught was from a stocked lake at Dever Springs - 16 1/2 lbs. But the biggest wild trout was a sea trout of 9lbs in the South Tyne. Know which one I will remember the longest...
Cranfield
19lbs-11ozs rainbow caught from the top lake at the Pennine Trout Fishery near Rochdale, about 25 years ago. It was one of the most disappointing catches in my fishing life, I thought I had hooked a bucket full of water. I just pumped it in without any fight and I wouldn't let them take a picture of me with it. I cleaned it and gave it to an old peoples home in Littleborough. I have caught lots of trout , all species, fresh and satwater, in some wonderous places and they were all better to catch that the "giant". Sometimes, size isn't important. ziplex
I was at Lyn Clywedog reservoir last Saturday on a boat with a mate, what a stunning place that is. Very difficult to contact fish as very bright but we managed a few. My one and only fish was a nice rainbow approx 3 1/2 lb and what with the scenery and weather i'd say the best trout i've caught in a very long time. There was an evening rise in a small shallow bay where I had a few takes but again, my mate seemed to have the gift on the day and landed returned approx 4, some of which were lovely little well marked browns. The bay was very nordic looking in the evening sun................lovely place My biggest trout to date was a rainbow just on 6lb, but i'd rather catch one or two in nice surroundings irrespective of size, rather than any monsters.....2 1/2 - 3lb is my ideal size I suppose. Whitebridges
My biggest was an 8lb 2oz rainbow from Bure Valley lakes. I've caught some nice reservoir fish from Grafham and Rutland, but my best fish have come from a local stream. The top one weighed 2lb 4oz and the bottom one 3lb 5oz, borth are wild browns. Jan147
Best one I have caught was a 14lb rainbow at a fishery on Anglesey run by Sid. Such a lovely fish and I was away for a long weekend, so I gracefully left it for others to enjoy and put it back in. Sadly never got a pic of it, with I regret now. Tend to fish catch and release now unless I want the odd one for dinner.
rimfire4969
My best was a 3.4lb wild brown in a chalk stream in Bucks when i was 11. Caught on a worm under a bridge. I know but it was 30 years ago.

AdamHall
well went fishing satuday only went for 4 hours but was a nice day none the less had 3 out , all good healthy fish around 2-3 pound and all gave a really good fight , 2 on that got off but thats my fault for not being quick enough , was a great day and nice and steady
Dunkield
9lb 12oz and it was horrible, no fight like dragging a sack in to the bank, I had to kill it as the fishery owner was watching me, other wise I would have 'lost it' at the net. I gave it to my next door neighbour when I got home as I don't eat pellet pigs. The other side of the coin was hooking what I thought was my biggest ever trout, you have heard all the 'down to the backing twice' stories but this one realy did, when landed it was 3lb on the nose just very fit and healthy. Give me decent wild fish or grown-on fish any day, quality is more important than size/weight.

Teal
River Goyt last year on Greenwell Spider. maybe 3lb or so. That is a stunning fish, well done. Looking forward to fishing some streams next year. Biggest wild trout was a shade under 2lb, which was a great surprise for the bit of water it came from. NJW
Nine and a half lbs from a lake near Salisbury and like alot of people here it gave me no pleasure at all! Stalking a 1/2 lb wild brownie in a small stream, with light tackle and small dry flies cannot be beaten in my view (but then i am biased!). Hooking and landing one is even better! I was with a mate on a small west country stream in the summer and as it went past 6 the fishing went mad. We caught alot and the most memroable were spot, cast, catch. Truely wild fish that put a huge bend in a 7ft 3# rod and they did not give up. Wish it was Spring! NJW
Aled
Very nice NJW but my personal favourite.... Night fishing for sea trout with a large fly working quietly down a pool, total peace and quiet, interrupted by a very large splash as a fish jumps. Wild fishing, paradise. NJW
Aled Something i have not had the pleasure of yet although i have been promising myself. i think i would need to find a guide (any recommendations?) and was lookin into southamptin as i hear there are very big fish there. i did catch one on a dry last year in dorset about 1/2 lb. lovely fish. I think i may have hooked another on the Frome on a nymph as well. it was the biggest fish i have ever seen in a river and it dominated proceedings until smashing the leader after a few seconds. I had no control at all! NJW

Aled
Hi NJW The best place to find out about sea trout are the sea trout forum or sea trout at your fingertips good web sites with loads of fellow sea trout nuts present. I'm sorry i dont know about the rivers in Southampton is it the Test or Avon?? Cheers Aled
