pavman
Went out on the river wall with Highlander for our first outing this year, looking to bag a duck or two and give his young Yellow Lab a retrieve then some Canada Geese strated coming over as we adjusted our deeks, I made it back to my hide as fast as my little fat legs would take me, Mr Highlander never made it as they passed in easy shot range I was rewarded with a nice Left and Right with the 10 bore and home loaded BB,s Edited October 6, 2008 by pavman

Cosd
Very nice shooting lads. Are Canada geese good to eat? I haven't tried them myself but I seem to remember someone saying they are tough and dry to eat...

pavman
Very nice shooting lads. Are Canada geese good to eat? I haven't tried them myself but I seem to remember someone saying they are tough and dry to eat... they are fantastic as long as you dont overcook, rich browm meat a bit like beef, I breast mine and they oven bake in a roasting bag with bacon over the breast to add a little fat and keep moist the legs give nice meat for a pie, curry or a treat for the dogs
Highlander
Am sure it wont of been far but did the lad retreive the Goose ?Good shooting No he didn't get the chance as Astra was onto them before he'd even got his nose to the ground. He picks pigeons fine but never even seen a goose until last night so he's got a bit of a learning curve to go through. 16 months so it's still early days yet. A natural hunter he quarters the ground well within shot range which will be ace for the woodcock/rough shooting and (most of the time) sits quietly in the hide watching and listening for the birds so I have high hopes that he'll end up a grand dog. He's a big strong lad and we reckon when he's swimming he'd pull a boat along (must be his Newfoundland ancestry!)
sambu13
if you find they get dry when you roast them whole, roast them upside down with plenty of butter as pavman said!
MC
Nicely done pavman, I shot 2 of those on friday night along with 4 greylag, I had to carry them a mile and a half back to the car. Merlin retrieved all 6 of them but then he collapsed when i got him home. More in Dogs and training. Pictures to follow.

ziplex
Great pic'........I had my very first goose a few weeks back and was very pleased but it didn't eat too well. Not too much meat on it and very dry, do I assume it was a young bird or a real old 'un??
