All,

What size Brattonsound gun cabinet would you reccoment please. I'm new to the hobby - have just sent off for my SGC and assuming that I can get that okay, what Brattonsound sound I get please?

I was thinking the 4/5 size one... Is that a good one to start with?

Thanks!

I would get the biggest one you can afford, that way as you buy new guns you will have room for them and not need to get another cabinet. If you are anything like me you will keep buying gun after gun  despite my better half telling me not to, luckly she does not know one gun from another so never knows if its a new one or not

Right. Well I could buy a £250 safe but I don't really want a walk in safe in my house (lol), I can see my getting more than 1 gun (assuming I get my licence *hopes*). So does a 4/5 gun sound okay?

I notice that Brattonsound do a number of different models, some with mini safes built in to them. How do people feel about these, are they a wise choice to have?

Thanks for your time.

When I started shooting I got a 3 gun cabinet which I ended up regretting because as everyone says you will end up getting a few. I moved from shotguns to rifles and this was a prob with depth with scope/bipod fitted so it will pay to go for an extra deep cabinet incase you get rifles in there in the future

If you dont and just stick to shotties least you have the extra space. And Id recommend a lockable top cabinet inside the cabinet for the ammo. I ended up buying that seperate too which wasnt cheap.

I got a 2 gun for my first cabinet and with my shotty/rifle with a scope its bloody fiddly just to get the rifle in let alone both of em  get the biggest you can mate, pred the deep ones for scopes aswell  trust me as soon as you see what they have in the gun shop you'll fill it up in no time

Here are some pics I took of my Brattonsound RL7+ last year. Hopefully fitting it at my new place in Shrewsbury when I hear from West Mercia about my SGC application.

Cabinet

Paul Hart gave me a great deal on it, huge reduction considering the only thing rendering it "b-grade" were a couple of minor scratches on the powder coating and a small dink. It claims to take 7 guns (probably unscoped Ruger 10/22's etc.) In reality, the capacity will be less. Especially if you get some SBS shotguns in there. Still it has the provision to take scoped rifles if I go down that route in the future so I'm happy with it.

The thing is so secure that I'd store gold coins quite happily in the top-compartment if I had any. :good:

At present I do not have a Shot Gun. I have just got my SGL but must get a cabinet first....

I have orderd a 9 gun cabinet from the web sit below for total £186.00 ...Post free.. This I find is the best value for money I can find. Thats £20.66 per gun.....

It is the SL9, a big tall box at 1515mm it has a shelf and will hold a muzzel loader if I want to adapt the shelf. Put a hole in the shelf. The same cabinet with no shelf was more costly.

I find gun safes with an internal lock up box inside to hold ammo is to small.

The law states that you must lock rifle ammo (not shot gun ammo) in another locked safe you can simply get another cheaper gun cabinet for ammo. That way if you go into rifles you can lock up and store thousands of bullets if you want.

I have the same Brattonsound as mr_colt. They are excellent, but you wont get 7 guns in it. Unless they are all slim o/u shotties.

A Brattonsound 4/5 gun can only fit 3 shotties and an airifle. Even then they are knocking against each other.

Go bigger than you need by at least 2 guns. I.e. if you think you will get 5 guns, get a 7 gun cabinet.

You guys need some organisational skills! With a little initiative you can get loads of kit in an RL7+. I have in mine...

BRNO 602 with a small Zeiss scope

Tikka T3 with 8x56 scope

CZ527 with 5-15x50 scope

10/22 with 3-9x40 scope

CZ452 with 3-9x40 scope

and 3 O/U shotguns

and my Wildcat moderator!

The only close call I had with it is with my old 28" barrel Xtrema semi auto, it would only just fit in under the locktop!

Get the biggest you can talk yourself into. I only wanted one gun when I started, but things change. Fitting a cabinet is a pain in the butt, so don't do it more than once. If money or space is tight then restrict yourself, otherwise buy a big one. If you don't get a big collection then so what? It's easy to put one gun into an RL7+, but you try getting 7 into a small one!

Jon.....

agree wholeheartedly with the go as big as you can. I am also new to shooting, having got my SGC 6 weeks ago.

I put a 3 gun in, now regretting it!!!! have no real intention of getting a FAC..... but now know that the 1 gun I currently have will not be the only one. Only good thing is that I will be moving within next 3-6 months so will have opportunity to upgrade...... but still the cost of 2 cabs is enough, when I should have only got the 1 bigger one.

I am looking at a 7 gun now!!!

The cost increment of buying larger safes is comparatively small, most of the manufacturing cost goes in the door, hinge and locks - so a few cms of extra width does not add a great deal to the price. A five gun cab can accommodate 7-8 std shotties if you top and tail them. Scoped rifles take up more space, and unless they are sideways in a shotgun cab need a deeper cab designed for them.

FEO recommendation is that carts are stored separately, on the principle that the amo should not be with the guns, so that if access to guns was obtained the amo is not easily available. Lockable tops are good for chokes air pistols, cash and the wifes jewellery, but not really the place for carts and ammo.

Hi GJUK

I started off with a BS SL5+ and convinced myself i would never need anything bigger, How wrong can you be. The hobby will grip you and before you know it you will have one of these and one of those and you will look in your safe and it will be full. I upgraded to a BS SL9+ and would have saved a fortune if that was my first cabinet.

I got it from http://www.safesecurityservices.co.uk which was the cheapest place on the net and the price included delivery.

Happy Hunting
