Zapp
Theres not a huge amount to say really - Tight chokes (3/4 and full is my choice) Some pokey 7.5's Track through the clay as it rises and KEEP THE GUN MOVING. Have fun! ZB
mirokujames
On peg 5, works for me but may be differant for you. if you are having trouble hitting the fast right handers. point your feet between 2-3 oclock so your body is twisted toward the trap house. this acts like a spring and helps me to get on the birds quicker. also mentally break the trap house up into 5ths and as you work along the line move your point of aim to the next 5th. Oh and have fun!! James
paul1966
i had my second go at dtl and only scored 2, i am finding it quite frustrating. i have been told i miss the over the top even though i can see the clay over the rib, one bad habit i have is not keeping the gun moving. i am using a sporter, i am planning on having another go this sunday and hoping to improve. tomleatel
Blimey Thanks for the thing about your feet, i'll remember that... 24g 7 1/2 ok?
Ozzy Fudd
i only shoot dtl for a bit of fun or practice, im not sure if this is in the rules or not (so dont shout if it isnt allowed!!) but i keep the gun pointed at the top of the trap or the housing its in (only do this with an automatic trap), i keep my eyes on the trap as well (basically looking down the barrel where the gun is pointed). by doing this i can see the clay coming up, out of the top of my eyes, so its easy to pull the gun onto it and blast the clay, normally i get around 20 outta 25 or so, so it works for me

Peter De La Mare
DTL is easy, I only a sporting shooter and tried DTL a few months ago and got 23 or 24 straight away. the middle birds are easy, just blot it out and pull the trigger, the 45 degree ones are nearly as easy, a bit of lead and bang. They all go to the same height and one of 3 angles.
clayman
Yes, buy lots of badges for your skeet vest - it obviously helps. oh, and 24g 7 1/2 with 1/2 choke in bottom barrel fired first (3pts) and if you miss have a 28g no 7 second barrel on 3/4 choke (2pts). A 24g will smack everything if you put the shot in the right place, and the 1/2 choke puts enough pellets on the edge on target. If you miss, the second shot will be 10yds further out, so a bit more poke is needed. With light first barrel loads you will not fatigue, and can concentrate on the shot without getting sore or a headache. Hopefully, second brain shaking shots with a faster heavier load will not be needed to often.
throdgrain
If you're trying DTL for the first few times my advice would be not to take the second shot. Load the gun and just get used to shooting the first. As has been said, blot out the middle clays and a bit of lead for the left right. I find its more just snap shooting though, people who havent shot it before tend to try to follow the clay for a couple of seconds then push ahead, but of course then its too late mostly. tomleatel
It's boring. I did not like it at all Which is my excuse for being so ****... I have never missed so much
Northerner
For me i start by aiming just under the top of the trap roof. Shout for it and let it go for a second or 2 take the first shot whilst it is going relatively flat. For the second shot i let it start to fall then just aim underneath it and shoot for the crossers i just swing and shoot i seem to be able to hit the ones going to the right but not the ones going left i currently use 28g no.7.5 and seem to be hitting more than i did with 28g no. 8s Edited December 6, 2008 by Northerner

mirokujames
yeh i really enjoy it also, you get used to it after a while. if u dont hit it before the top of its rise, then 9 times out of ten theres no point even letting a round off as you will probably miss. best bet is see it out of the trap and nail it. i do fancy a go at abt sometime soon though
throdgrain
Thing I didnt like about ABT was all the moving about after every shot.
tomleatel
I think that i would have enjoyed it more if i hit more of the targets I would try it again, but as mentioned i think in heinsight i was waiting to long, and not getting it as soon as it was out.. Hey hum lesson learnt
mirokujames
yeh that ios the downfall to abt. i try and count for 1 second before i take the shot: see it,follow for about a second then bang clay is gone.
Patrick1964
Shot a 100 bird DTL at landegla today, my second competition, but birds only. First stand, 22 ! best ever round, pretty happy. Followed with a 20, then 18, then........................15. Worst round I've shot since I started. Needless to say I handed the card in and slipped off....it didn't help that the young lad next to me shot 99/295. There's always next time. deershooter
DTL is the one disipline that realy only works with a deadicated trap gun. I shoot DTL at AA class, and when I had a go in the summer with my sporter and 1/2 choke only managed 14 x 25 where with the trap gun I would be unhappy with only 24x25 as to use the clubs trap gun it makes all the differance.
