Jim Tait
I got left behind on a windy road by a couple of greylags last week - managing about 35mph through bends, so doing at least 40 against the wind No wonder I miss behind  Jim
Ozzy Fudd
id say im the fastest when in full flight from a ladies house after her husband has come home early....
casts_by_fly
I think of the birds we notmally shoot, the pigeon is the fastest in full flight. The grouse is the quickest to get up off the ground (at least the ruffed grouse as compared to all of the other birds). Thanks, Rick
anser2
With little doubt geese can be the fastest. I have seen them with a gale behind them sweep in over the marsh edge swing around and land on a field behind me in 30 seconds. A distance of about a mile and half. Allowing for the time they banked in the wind to land I recon they were moving somewhere between 80 and 100 miles an hour . In level steady flight with no wind I have clocked them at 45 mph along side the car. Mind you the slowest geese can be the hardest to hit. Some years ago I was flighting with the geese comming in off the sands into the teeth of 50mph winds. They made very slow progress and had time to scan the marsh below them very well. As soon as I made a move to get the gun up the geese lifted sharply , slid out sideways and let the wind push them backwards. I got 6 for 25 shots , they were almost impossible to hit. In the end the only way i could connect was to shoot slightly off to the downwind side of the bird somewhere behind the right wing. And when I did get one it fell over 100 yards off downwind. But it was a hell of a gale.
Greenhunter
I think a pigeon with an autumn gale behind it would take some hitting. I drove alongside a pair last year on a calm day for about 1/2 mile. I was doing 50mph and they were just coasting along with few wing beats. Imagine if they'd been trying...
