When you receive the deactivated firearm back from the proof house it states the barrel length on the de-act certificate ,If you then shorten the barrels it must be sent for re-inspection at the proof house as technically you have significantly altered a major item of its working parts that has been stamped by the inspector and the deactivation and inspection/certificate is no longer valid.

how to deactivate a side by side shotgun

Both barrels must have a slot cut in them from the breech end a minimum of 8mm wide and underneath for the full length of any forearm woodwork , The chambers then have a cylindrical piece of metal inserted in both chambers and fully welded in a ring or along the slot already cut in the chamber , The breech face must then be weakened by milling a slot or machining a cone so that it cannot support the base of a cartridge together with removing or destroying the firing pins and their recesses .

Then take to the proof house

i once fired a sawn off shotgun down a testing tube at a RFD friends - i've never felt such a backblast, i looked like i'd just smoked an acme exploding cigar.

agree with everyone else - he's asking for trouble even though it's legal to own it.

From the Proof House specifications for deactivation.

(xxiii) Any substantial alteration to a de-activated firearm (eg. the shortening of

shotgun barrels, or adaptation to allow the firing of blank cartridges or to

operate as an air weapon) will render the de-activation certificate null and

void. Although only a Court can provide a definitive ruling on the subsequent

classification of the altered item, the automatic exemption from certificate

control provided by Section 8 of the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988 would

no longer apply to the various component parts, unless the weapon is

resubmitted to the proof house for re-certification.

If anyone wants the full specifications send me a pm and I will email them to you, A 43 page pdf is a bit to big to post here
