Terry P
I've got a hornets nest in a bird box in my garden, thier no trouble at the mo but they seem to be multiplying.I've got an 8 month old babe so they need to go.I don't want to kill them, would it be possible to move the box to some fields on a nearby farm.I'm wondering if all the hornets return to the nest for the night,if so I could bag it and move to the new site whilst its dark. Ferret Master
They tend to be less aggressive than our common wasp. FM

Evil Elvis
 Not aggressive, tell jerico that after he shot a hornets nest....priceless...........
Mungler
Are they proper hornets or the larger Euro Wasp? Either way take care. A guy I used to work with was very keen on gardening (orchids and bonzai stuff) and he welcomed wasps into his garden because they ate all the green and black fly. Me, I'd get rid. malkiserow
Get the RSPCA to rehome them But seriously, if the box is perfectly sealed with tape over the hole, do this at night and take them out to the countryside and leave them be (removing the tape with great care! Possibly with a long bit of string on the tape). Then make a new birdbox for home Let us know what you eventually do
Terry P
Cheers for the replys folks,I'm guessing hornets are not very popular .I'm gonna wait till its dark tonight and move um.Watched the box last night and they stopped coming out just before dark. They've done me no harm and I reckon they propably don't taste to good so I'd feel bad just killing them.Hope I don'y live to regret it
Edward
I have delt with hornets in a stack of bales before, there were 6 nest in this stack, my solution was to slowly pull the bales away, then hit the nest with a long stick and then peg it round the corner as fast as I could Now what you want to do, when they are in it, block up the hole dowse the box in deisel, parafin, then torch 'em! al4x
I like Hornets they're the least agressive in that insect family and are in decline. So really best bet is what you're planning just move it with the minimum of fuss.
hobbit
If it were me I'd want more than a bit of gaffer tape over the hole. They can chew through wood so a bit of tape is not going to last long and I don't even want to think about the consequenses of a car full of very p***** o** hornets. Get enough stings and they WILL kill you. One will hurt like hell. I have had dealings with them before and agree they are not overly aggressive UNTIL you start messing with the nest. Doc Holliday
Kill the bloody things. If you don't they'll take out the honey bees and I'll have no honey to put on me crumpets.
Baldrick
I have never been stung by a hornet, but I was led to believe by our bee-keeping tenant on the farm that a wasp sting is noticeably worse than a hornet sting. Pain is truly subjective though.
