sweepy
Thought I would just ask a few questions on your views on gun shops.I ask this because where I live Ithink the shops are a very poor, its either very bad service or you have to travel so far just to buy ammo. I know of one gun shop that sometimes doesn't open on a saturday cause the bloke has gone shooting(fair enough but thats when we need the gun shop in the season). So what does everybody look for in a gunshop ie selection, advice, stock, price or convience. Sweepy

Cranfield
Gun Shops are one of those places that have changed tremendously over the years, mainly due to circumstances beyond their control. My nearest (40 mile round trip) has very few new guns in stock , "but can order them", has a limited choice of cartridges in stock, "but can order them" and you get the same answer when you enquire about any other shooting related equipment. However, they do have a good range of Country Gentlefolk clothing, especially the coloured silk scarves. Together with some nice fancy wellies, dressed sticks, funny hats and all the other things that no shooter would want. Also, like a lot of other Gun Shops, you know more about guns and shooting than the staff and thats probably the bit I like the least. Internet shopping isn't helping them (just like Fishing tackle shops), but I also don't think they are helping themselves. I actually make a 90 mile round trip to CountryWay at West Malling, where the stock levels (esp cartridges), service and knowledge suit me. sweepy
I to have noticed this, you can buy any item of clothing but your choice of ammo is very very limited. Wouldn't be to bad if the clothing that they sold was for everyday shooting but no its for the well off for formal driven days. For my fowling gear me and Little Sweepy always travel down to John Forseys and for everyday cartridges we just use the local agricultal suppliers. sweepy
Hi MGMan I buy all my shotgun cartridges from Doe's may be a little dearer but easy to park and get too, they do stock a good selection of clothing.Bought most of my clothing in Canada as they seem to really have the good stuff with loads of choice and very good prices.(don't work out that cheaper if you include flights for 4 though). Ozzy Fudd
ive got 4 within 12 miles of my house (one only 100 yards away!) :o only two of them are dedicated gunshops. the other two are hardware/general sports shops, not a great selection of guns if im honest but plenty of clothing, and you do find the odd bargain; of the other two, one is tannyoky, which has clay ranges at the shop, and more guns than you can wet your pants over , the other one called the shootin shack, only opened last year, the guys were very helpful (and cheap) when i called in to see about buying a mossberg pump but it took that long for their rfd certificate to come through i got fed up waiting and bought one from tannkyoky instead, so havnt been back to them since

GW80
i use the shop at my local clay ground to buy most things, have bought all but one of my guns from him over the last 10 years or so, usually if it's a game gun it has been ordered but have never had to wait more than a week, they always have a good selection of ammo in all sizes not just clay loads, but they are a bit limited with their decoying gear and clothing so i tend to buy online or at game fairs! Gordon R
Very lucky in the North West. We have quite a few decent guns shops. Bamfords Eccleston - large stock of guns (hundreds), decent prices, good trade-ins, cartridges and clothing - friendly. McAvoys Standish - hundreds of guns. Good prices and trade-ins. Cheap shells and very, very helpful. Malmo Bay Horse - massive stock of guns, cheap shells, friendly, decent trade-ins. There are others - Entwistles at Preston, who stock less, but are nice people to deal with. The Shooting Shack, Bolton - very, very friendly and helpful. Then we have:- Target Sports at Bolton - massive mail order type store. Few guns, high prices - staffed by people who seem to know little. Bond and Bywater at Preston - nothing to recommend them at all in my book. Edited July 11, 2009 by Gordon R
Imperfection
Because its quite rural here gunshops tend to be fairly well stocked, but the one nearest to me occasionally runs low on cheap pigeon loads.
anser2
We have a few decent gun shops in Norfolk , but for cartridge selection and price you will have to go a long way to beat Lynngs of Gt Massingham , nr Kings Lynn. Their cartridge store is vast stocking all the major brands including a lot of the more unusual types of shells. And they always have time for a chat too which is a bonus. I recently found a small shooting supplier ( Glaven Shooting Supplies , Bodham , nr Holt ) , but with no guns , that stocked a very good range of shooting clothes at very good pricies. This week I got a Max 4 breathable , storm proof jacket for £70. I have seen the same jacket at double that price in other shops. MPT1
PAX GUNS on Archway Road London N6 sell very little in the way of clothing but stock an excelent range of guns and equipment. My only crittisism is that the owner talks you out of buying things that you don't need but fancy. They open late one evening a week and Saturdays. They close lunchtimes because some local school kids are nucancy and there are some local anti blood sports activists that come in and show off. They are truly dedicated shooters themselves.
