17 HMR Ammo

Recommended Posts

Went into my local gunshop at the weekend for ammo for my 17HMR. I usually only buy Federal Premium V Shok for the gun, but he had Hornady 17GR V Max on special offer, £9 for 50 as opposed to Federals at £13.

I explained that my gun is accurate with the Feds and I did not want to risk a different brand as it may not be so good. He advised that Hornady make the Federals, so they are basically the same bullet just in a different box and cover.

Any idea if he is right? I have checked both Hornady and Federals website and cannot see any connection.

Help please if you can.....

 Not quite sure he's telling you the truth. For a start, the bullet heads are completely different. V-Max and V-Shok are designed to break up in different ways. (Might be worth looking at the difference between .22LR Quik Shok and usual hollowpoint ammo on Youtube, to see what I really mean)

The cases and powder are really the only bit that can be thereabouts the same. I can easily imagine one company (Hornaday will probably make them, seeing as the round is named after them) making and distributing blank cases and allowing other companies to stamp them, if they're not already done to order. (Latter sounds about right)

I don't see why you'd fear them to be inaccurate. Yes they may make your POI different, but cheap can sometimes be cheerful.

Put it this way, I was out zeroing with Garyb a few months back and I shoot the Hornaday rounds and I was setting off shotgun primers at 100 yards with ease. That's not bad at all when you think about it

I also have the same dilema as yourself A.V.T,

they are not the same !!! each brand will shoot a different POI in my rifle, and many others. if they were the same then they wouldnt would they  If they were the same they would all have the same tips, how can they be the same??? If you can only get decent groups with Feds then they are the ones you would have to use. The only way round it is to change the barrel. then go through the process of selecting which groups the best, Tell you RFD to stop giving you BS, or go and find one that knows what he is on about.

When I bought my .17 I bought some Remington Accu tip amm as that was all the shop had. I zeroed with it and shot several rabbits. I then bought some of the Hornady V Max stuff with the blue tip and shot a few rounds at a target. There was no noticable difference with it. OK if you were to get scientific about it and used sand bag rests etc then it may have a slightly different POI but about 200 rabbits have not noticed the difference.

This is great because I can just swap between the two depending on what I can get and not worry about rezeroing.

I must say that sounds a little over the top.

Yes but i was just trying to say its the "only" option in some cases,

There were 3 of us on a zeroing range all different makes of rifles some years ago proving that they cannot "all be the same" we had all the 17HMR bullets available at that time and tested them all through each rifle. And yes they were all different, from shot gun type groups to different POI.

what more can be said.

any way were,s the pictures

wrong section

Is there realy that much difference (Except in the price)? I am not trying to provoke an agrument here or be antagonistic, it's purely that I am new to rifles and am asking out of interest. I use a 22-250 and have not noticed any significant difference between Remington Premier Acutip (What I started with) and Sako Rem. Gamehead (Both 50grs) which is what my RFD had when I wanted some more

Without getting too technical please could someone explain the difference to me?

i've not noticed any significant difference in the .17hmr ammo i've tried - though i've only shot Remmington and Winchester in 17gr Ballistic tips and CCI 20gr jacketed hollowpoints (obviously slight different in poi - about an inch higher at 100yards)

Most .17 HMR ammo is produced by CCI.

See the link below for more information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.17_HMR

There is also some information on Chuckhawks about the loads.

http://www.chuckhawks.com/17HMR.htm

The .17 HMR at £9 a box is normally the blue tip ammo.

This is purported to be the Mach 2 heads which were never used being filled for the .17 HMR.

It was supplied to the RFD at a price which would allow them to make a few quid on each box, but they were all supposed to sell it at the same price, although can range from £7.50 up to the standard £11 per box, depending on your RFD.

I was not so worried about spending £9, I was more worried about missing a load of rabbits, or worse near misses and possibly wounding them, by just clipping them.

Yes these ones are blue tips, they are at Mallard Barn Shop in Wattisham Suffolk, the chap has quite a few cases of them, so worth getting if you like them and you are out that way.

I will go out and try them in a half hour and will report back later!

The blue tips were made for the HM2 but because it didn't take off they are using the surplus and selling them cheaper. Same bullet, different colour plastic tip. They're still 17gn HMR and shoot the same as the red tips.

I already put a few thousand of the them through the CZ.

On mine the zero is the same as with Remmy, Hornady Red, Winny and even Feds.

Les and I used a few hundred of them shooting bunnies a few months ago, and found they were just them same as everything else we tried.

The only difference I noticed is that they seemed to make a bigger mess of the bunnies. :hmm:

You are aware of the process of zeroing a rifle? I can assure you that the rounds will be within 6" of the original zero. So just a few clicks here and there of the scope and it'll be back on zero.

If you're worried about the batch of bullets, send them back. I can safely say that the rounds are tested and tested to ensure quality.

Plus, the price doesn't = a bad batch of bullets. Dependent on what RFD you buy from, one box will be as low as £7 and the same type as much as £15 at another shop... It's all about how much they want to rip you off, not the quality of the ammo.

What is the Mallard barn shop like in Wattisham?

The shop is fairly small and it is in a farm yard of a working arable farm, but modern. Good selection of new and used shotguns and some rifles, they can also order in anything you want. Cartridge range and ammo for rifles I find is excellent, clear pigeon 32g are £45 for 250, cheapish clay cartridges are £27.50 for 250. Also plenty of clays, gun assessories, air weapons, some clothes. Open late on Tuesday and Friday I think til about 8pm.

Worth a look and used by a lot of locals around here.

Did not take rifle out last night so not tried those rounds yet, sat on a guad and got 15 bunnies with Hatsun Escort instead.
