wymberley
Hi, All, Thinking of changing to a different magazine as I'm finding my current one is becoming repetative and to be honest, somewhat shallow in content. I won't mention which one it is. Does anyone have any comments on the topic title publication? Cheers, Phil
LostWomble
SS is OK as they go, but as with the weekly publication after a couple of years you get a strange sense of deja vu. Edited August 28, 2009 by LostWomble
smig4373
I wrote a letter of complaint to SS,they've changed the way they bound it...It just has staples in it now...Ihad mine 2 days last month and it fell to bits..and the "gun a month comp" is now "gun every 3 months"...Havnt heard back from them yet, been 3 weeks now.I'm thinking of a change but im a subscriber so im stuck with it for a while yet....Whats the alternative tho...Dont like sporting gun and shooting times is to thin for the money..... Ean76
They could at least use different pictures as you see the same ones 3 or 4 times within a year

Spaniel
to be honest i got a bit bored with two of them and once my subs came to an end i just didnt bother getting them re-newed, dont think i have brought a shooting mag since last Jan, been buying the angling times on and off lately to catch up on the fishing and thats about it
Slug
In the very limited few months i have had to read them I prefer Sporting Gun but still get the shooter.
Jan147
I have Sporting shooter on subscription and a friend has sporting gun, we read them and then swop, read each others and then pass them back. This way I get two lots of reading for the price of one! BOGOF brilliant. I then pass them onto to others at the gun club.
billywizz
I like all magazines but in here you have to put up with what turns up,,sometimes a visitor brings in a shooting one,,,but after my crime they dont let me have shooter mags

Richard756
I have been reading sporting gun for the past 2 years (starting to take up room now havn't thrown one away) and am now starting to find it quite repetative
Toombsy
I have been reading sporting gun for the past 2 years (starting to take up room now havn't thrown one away) and am now starting to find it quite repetative They all are mate. All specialist mags are the same year in year out. I've got one year's worth of Sporting Gun, and I'll keep that lot to remind me of a few tips as the seasons go by. But to be honest if you read a year's worth from cover to cover, you'll have picked up all the tips you need to put you in damn good stead in the field to last a lifetime. Nothing really changes... decoy patterns are pretty much the same, the quarry is the same, the way the quarry acts/feeds/breeds/reacts is the same, the crops are the same, cartridges and guns are basically the same, and the seasons are the same. I suppose the only thing that's news to the likes of us in the last decade/20 years is the introduction of the rotary, battery operated flapper, flocked decoys, new advancements in camouflage design and that's about it when you think about it. Everything else just turns full circle. It's the same with fishing monthlies - in summer you get features on carp off the top, in autum it's roach on hemp and river barbel, in winter it's pike on deadbaits and chub on cheese paste, and in spring its how to scratch a few bites from commercial carp on the pole. The only reason I'd buy any shooting mag again is when I'm on the lookout for another gun. Or if they start doing cover-mounted DT10s. tractorboy
I wrote a letter of complaint to SS,they've changed the way they bound it...It just has staples in it now...Ihad mine 2 days last month and it fell to bits..and the "gun a month comp" is now "gun every 3 months"...Havnt heard back from them yet, been 3 weeks now.I'm thinking of a change but im a subscriber so im stuck with it for a while yet....Whats the alternative tho...Dont like sporting gun and shooting times is to thin for the money..... basically this comes down to production costs its alot cheaper to produce the stitched versision than the perfect bound version but having said that it would be nice if some of the cost was passed on to the consumer but pigs will fly first i reckon
John_R
Toombsy, that is a very honest appraisal, and is why I stopped buying any fishing mags a very long time ago. I am about to come to the end of a year's sub to Airgun World, and have cancelled, and I suspect I will do the same when I get past a year of Sporting Gun. TomV
Got a subscription to SS, I think its the best shooting mag on the market. Myself too has had problems with pages falling out because the magazines are not bound properly
Delbert
Funny thing is if you went up to Rowarth Shooting Ground (Little Mill) there was a pile of antique shooting mags mostly shooting times, without looking at the date you would swear that the articles were current. The mags were anything up to 30 years old mind you the gun adverts were a dead giveaway flippin 'eck how much I've been buying Sporting Gun for the first time in many years and I find it has changed a fair bit however I am still waiting for a gun review to say "what a pile of crepe"
plinker
sporting gun/sporting shooter are pretty lame but the worst by a long way has to be sporting rifle, what they know about rifles you could fit on the back of a postage stamp. sorry to be so negative but thats the way i see it. i still buy shooting times but mainly in the game season. Greenhunter
I've just had the latest copy fall through the letter box a couple of days ago and I thought that it seems to be getting repetitive as soon as I opened the envelope. Building pigeon shooting hides ..again!! same advertisers same....everything(almost). And anyway, I am a bit annoyed with the editor, Mr Marchington.. there was an article a few issues ago about E C Hodges, an actioner working at the end of the 19th century. In the article they asked if anyone knew of any guns that Hodges had worked on. If anyone did would they send them the details etc. It just so happened that a friend of mine had just come across a beautiful example of a black powder S/S made entirely by Hodges. 1 of only four currently known to exist. A rare example and a lovely piece. To cut a long story short, I emailed the said Mr Marchington with the details and where it might possibly be viewed and I have never heard a single word back in return. Common courtesy says a quick 'thank you' is due a least but absolutely zilch, nada, nuffin indeed nowt!! lordofthewings
I came across 3 or 4 shooting times magazines from the late fifties ( 1957 ) apart from being in black and white, and the script a little stilted, the could be this weeks LOTW
