grasshopper
It all started on Wednesday night.I needed some Rabbits for the Ferrets so myself and Stewy went up onto the bales,.22 with me and .243 with Stew. All we saw were a few Hares. At 8 15,the Hare in the field we were in suddenely stood bolt upright and then proceeded to canter off...could only mean 1 thing..yep,a fox! As Stewy readied his .243 i kept tabs on it using NV and then Picked up the lamp in readiness.Once he was settled i light up the fox, only for it to do there usual trick around here and trott off..a smalll squeak stopped it but only for about 2 seconds and it proceeded to follow the crest of the rise in this field..yep,on the down side of it! Although i managed to call it out of the wood, into the field and get it to stand for about 10secs,it was only visible to me as i was standing and Stewy was down on the bipod..even 3 round bales high was not high enough. Within 5 mins a car drove up the nearby road and lamped the fields,no wonder Nv is the best option for us. We gave it best and decided to return next evening with my .22 250 which is set up for the NV add on. Oh yeah,i head shot 3 rabbits for the ferts. B) Next evening saw us a little late as i,d had a bad sleep after nightshift. It was 7 35 when we pulled into the field.I quickly ran across and dropped the Rabbit entrails down as bait whilst Stewy took the rifle etc up to our lofty perch on the silage bales. About 5 mins after getting set up,Stewy whispers, get your weapon ready ...now here,s where i,m hoping he,s seen a fox, otherwise i,m going home. Sure enough it,s our fox,but the little sod is early and seems to have gone along the bottom of the field tonight, out of view and is downwind of us.It stops, sniffs the air and turns to head back into the wood.A whistle stops it but just as i line up the x,it drops into a furrow(fields just been ploughed)and disapears, occaisional glimpses of it,s eyes as it walks into the wood only serve to frustrate even more! We watch for about 5 mins but it doesn,t reapear,so again it,s given best...this one,s a challenge now. :yp: I turn to check another field..we can cover 3 from our vantage point, and to my delight, there,s a fox mooching around about 200 yds away. NV is attached and i get comfy on a bale,Stewy follows it with his NV and as i,m now ready,he starts to call but it,s not stopping,it justs looks a few times and is heading for the fence.Ah well it will probably enter the field we,re in so not to worried, then another squeak stops it side on at about 170yds. I line up.squeeze the trigger and hear that satisfying thump as i watch her fall in the scope..not a twitch! Small Vixen. Then panic ensues as Stewy says " you,d better re-load,there,s another 1" I re-load and pick up the 2nd fox. This 1 is bigger than the previous and i follow it as it heads for the dead 1.It stops to sniff and i squeeze the trigger...click..safety is still on ( not been out for while) Safety off, quickly aim and promptly miss, as i reload i jam the bullet and have to remove the magazine, drop the bullets(ended up with 2 in my hand)put them back in,re-fit the magazine, load and now i,m ready..would you believe it,this Fox has only gone about 40-50yds away and is sniffing about. :o I steady myself properly this time, scold myself for rushing the previous shot( i still get fox fever every now and then)and wait for this 1 to stop. It duely does, facing slightly away from me.I line up on it,s shoulder and squeeze, crack, thump and i watch this fella collapse too! Relief is the word to best describe my emotion at this point and the enquiry begins, although to be fair Stewy didn,t take the mick out of me...yet.He,s on the drink tonight so i feel some abusive txts are to be forthcoming. Here`s the 2 foxes,Dog and Vixen, both in extremely good condition and only the 2nd and 3rd fox i,ve shot this year on the shoot, work and a lack of foxes for some strange reason have not made venturing out worthwhile so far.I thought that giving them a rest all year would result in an abundance, but it,s only now that some are starting to show,so further sorties are on the cards. :yp: Thanks for reading GH

tikkamark
About 5 mins after getting set up,Stewy whispers, get your weapon ready ...now here,s where i,m hoping he,s seen a fox, otherwise i,m going home. :( I think id be heading home pronto too if there wasnt a fox spotted! But excellent write jeff I really really would love a nv setup like yours i love the lying in wait type of foxing that you seem to use a lot to good effect Myself and my mate podge were out last night and we got one dog but i missed another...we were calling on top of a large square bale for a good 15mins then a fox appeared behind us i settled on its chest and just as the trigger broke it stepped forward i was awful annoyed but least it was a clean miss,to our surprise 2 big red deer stags that were no more than 150yrds away from us in the same field didnt even flince at the boom of the unmoderated 223! I made up for it about an hour later when i dropped a nice big dog fox at 170ish yards hit pinpoint in the shoulder.
