A wind too good to miss.

I have been in Lincolnshire for two days and I got back late last night feeling pretty weary. Today was going to be a day dealing with statutory authorities and I had girded my loins to try and deal with the dreaded BT. The wind blasting at my bedroom window put paid to most of that.

Having set myself a target of two hours office work I flew out of the door with all of my kit and Jasper snug in his new wind cheater Jacket. He has not one scrap of meat on him yet and a cold wind would blow straight through him so better to be safe than sorry. For those thinking that a dog jacket might be a bit ponsey all I can say is that I am happier now that I have one for him as I know he will be warmer sitting out in the hide. I will resist the temptation of creating a top knot for him tied up with a pink bow.

After a drive of two miles I had identified a flight line, one which I have been watching for a week or so. The wind was strong and I had to erect my hide in the shelter of a long belt of trees which the pigeons were using as a wind break on their journey to the rape fields. I did put out the rotary even though this was supposed to be flight line shooting and it worked very well, bringing in some birds which were not exactly on the line but across the field in front of me. The wind made for some spectacular shooting but for once I was on reasonable form and I shot some pretty decent birds. One bird I let come all of the way across me into the wind and I hit it with both barrels but it carried on over the belt. I just happened to be looking to my extreme left two or three seconds later when I saw it crash down totally dead 150m on my left having been carried that far by the wind. Had I not seen it I would not have gone that far to look for any birds at the end of the session.

The bag was forty pigeons and one Jay. I thought that I had 38 down. Jasper found the other two in the belt of trees.

The picture shows my view from the hide looking down wind. The birds were coming over the small wood in the distance into the wind. One floater is visible. I used two floaters and I believe that they channelled birds to me quite well.

good session, what time did you set up by the way and whos method did you use :hmm:

I set up at 11:30 and packed up at 1:30.

Sadly I cannot give you any credit for my decoy pattern as all I had out was the rotary and the floaters. I will use the Yickdaz method the next time I'm out.
