Recently put on the pest list, so you can shoot them all year round (that's not to say you should)...but their season used to open on Sept 1st and we're almost there.

You must use non toxic shot on them regardless of when or where you shoot them - any questions just ask me - there's a lot of muck talked about non-toxic on this forum (slight understatement.)

Yes, there is still a closed season for Canada geese. You cannot shoot them during this period because they may be tasty to eat. If shooting them as a pest you must do so for the reasons set out in the general licence - such a protecting public health. Not to do so risks prosecution. See here: http://basc.org.uk/shooting/general-licences/ .

They can be shot on gl for health and public safety and crop protection i beleive. I have shot for a local golf course and I rang natural england and asked their advice. They said i was fine to carry out the pest control.. So i thinned out the numbers.

Also to cook them minus the brick, breast them, you will see what looks like a film on the meat, use a sharp knife to take this off (dont take to much meat). This film tends to make the meat tough.. After doing this just slow cook it like a stew.

Is, of course, the correct answer.

And to those who claim they're 'vermin'...you're wrong.

They're classed as wildfowl and must be treated as such, so non toxic shot must be used unless using a rifle.

I was told that if they are deemed to be damaging crops /game cover they can be shot at any time , I only repeating what I have been told .

There is a bit more to gl than that. Circumstances beyond agriculture also but the actual shooting must not be a first call resort or convenient excuse

I understand that if the Canada geese are eating and fouling a field and the farmer wants them shot then go ahead, It`s safe to assume that rthe farmer will have set the dog on them and tried to scare them away before calling you in to shoot them, as said you must use steel or some other non toxic shot to do the job.

Err...so they're on the Open General Licences, but still have a closed season? I'm confused.

Let me just say I wouldn't shoot one outside of their former season, for personal reasons, but surely they can be legally controlled all year round for the reasons outlined in the OGL?

There is no closed season on Canada geese, they can be shot all year round, other methods of deterring them have to have been tried, ie dogs flags shouting **** *** etc etc , they must be causing a nuisance, soiling or destroying crops ( grass is a crop ) or ruining grassed areas.

Having satisfied that lot get on with it.

Wrong They do have a Close as from 31st January you Can NOT shoot them purely for SPORTING REASONS. from 1st February unless on the foreshore where the season ends 20th February Inland you can then after doing as you described shoot them under the GL

Nobody is disputing that. No species on the OGL can be shot for sporting reasons - they're either on the licence for protection of native flora & fauna, the licence for prevention of threat to human health or protection of agricultural activity. So no, having looked at the OGL on Defra's site, Canada Geese do not have a closed season - that's not to say they should be controlled while breeding or juvenile.

Read the act. All birds are protected in law except those that might legally be shot in season.

Gl is just a tag on exemption issued or otherwise annually

It's important all shooting people understand this and comply as non compliance putd you back into shooting a bird you cannot the sentence might be less but it's the same offence as shooting an osprey or golden eagle etc

I do believe there are persons out thier looking for gl test cases and I know wildlife crime officers have been having some pretty focused training on the matter over the last few years

Me personally? I think the gl has become a sick joke with many simply abusing it. Rather than using it as a management tool

but they 100% have a season in which they can be killed for sporting reasons or s food resource
