  1. To make matters worse, only legally held guns will be eligible for buyback, the rest will be collected under amnesty. It doesn't take a genius to work out that the honest gun owner will most likely hand their gun in, but the criminal element will not.
  2. Correct (for the most part) and no, the authorities will not know what needs to be handed in.
  3. The dust has started to settle here in NZ. In round one of gun law changes, we have lost all semi-automatic centrefire rifles and semi-automatic shotguns with a magazine capacity greater than five cartridges. No shotguns with detachable magazines will be allowed either. Rimfire magazines will now be limited 10 rounds. The changes have received almost unanimous support from the political parties, and it is likely that they are supported by the majority of the general public. Not surprisingly, some groups within the gun owning community aren't thrilled and have been vocal in their opposition. The arguments on both sides have been predictable. Regardless, the legislation has been rushed through and there has been a lot of uncertainty about what would/wouldn't be banned and the details of a government "buyback". We are likely to see more law changes in the future and a gun register is being discussed. Semi-automatic centrefire rifles, often AR15 were commonly used in NZ for large animal pest control. Usually goats, but also deer on Department of Conservation land. In legal terms, deer have no more status in NZ than a rat or a mouse.
  4. We have A LOT of discussions in our household about this. With the odd exception, we eat everything I shoot/catch, so that makes things easier. My boy understands that we hunt/fish to eat and has no problem with it.
  5. If you're talking about 22LR, a 16" barrel will be fine. A longer barrel doesn't in itself mean more accuracy. I've had my CZ452 barrel chopped to 15" and very happy with it.
  6. I've had a camo Maxus for 2 years, no problems. Lovely gun to hold/shoulder and I tried a few.
  7. I took in a kitten that was found abandoned on a farm. What was I thinking? Lucky animal as feral cats are considered more than legitimate quarry by firearms users here. Anyway, fast forward 6 years and we have a lovable moggy that literally won't leave the house. Cruel to keep them inside? Depends on the animal.
  8. I believe your asking if you can put a moderator designed for a larger calibre on your .243? Contact DPT directly , they have great customer service and are happy to answer any questions in my experience. http://www.dpt.co.nz/contact-form.php
  9. I would love one of those, especially as I now have a Tikka centrefire. 16inch 22LR threaded barrel straight out the box, very nice! If they produced a stainless version, my CZ would be looking for a new home!
  10. Very sad what's happened to UK coarse fishing.
  11. Well, I said within reason. I could have got a smaller calibre for goats. Most people here seem to use .223 and I want a dedicated subsonic centrefire, but neither would make the goats any deader. I would have bought the 7mm08 for deer stalking anyway, so would have ended up with three rifles instead of the one that I have. I'm happy with that decision, but each to their own.
  12. There is the saying ""Beware the man with one gun...". I'm not sure where it originates, but there's some sense in it (within reason of course).
  13. I think I’m done, my gun cabinet contains: Bolt action 22LR Semi-auto 12G Bolt action 7mm08 These guns cover almost every situation I’m likely to find myself in. If I won the lottery and had time on my hands, I’d probably add a smaller calibre centrefire for long distance rabbits and an ultra short barrel 300 blackout rifle of some description for bush work with subsonic rounds. What’s your “complete” collection?
  14. I posted on another thread recently about subsonic WMR rounds. That would potentially push me toward WMR over 17HMR if I had to make that choice.
  15. Winchester. There was another, but can’t find it now. My logic was WMR subsonic for typical 22LR stuff, shortish range and quiet; supersonic for longer range when noise isn’t an issue and/or you need more oomph. Obviously, scope would have to be adjusted, but that’s not the end of the world. All based on the one or two brands of subsonic ammo available being good and suiting your rifle. It’ll be interesting to see if subsonic WMR takes off.
  16. I’m a bit late to the party, but 22LR. is a great calibre despite the trajectory. I couldn’t shoot on half the places I visit with anything louder. And yes, another satisfied CZ owner! As a point of interest, a couple of manufacturers are making subsonic WMR rounds now. In theory, a WMR rifle could be very versatile. I’d want to do more research on it, but something I would think about if buying another rimfire.
  17. It’s funny, I could go and buy an AR15 right now, or any large calibre rifle I fancied and no one would bat an eyelid, but I have zero interest in such things. My 7mm08 bolt action is more than enough gun for the foreseeable future and I find semi-automatic rifles deeply unappealing.
  18. Do you NEED to shoot a deer though? I'm just playing devils advocate. Like many people I don't need to shoot any animals or targets, or indeed own any guns. I should imagine that very few do.
  19. I bought the stainless lite. They are virtually standard issue in NZ. Everyone has one.
  20. Each to their own. I renovated a flat on my own in London many years ago. I was working full time and it took me two years to complete. I can’t even bear the thought of hanging a picture now! As for golf and the like, I never had interest in any sport that wasn’t a fieldsport. When I was a kid and forced to play football at school, I couldn’t care less if the ball went in the goal or not. Drove my PE teacher nuts!
  21. Presumably rifle weight isn't too much of an issue?
  22. Fishing and diving. Fishing is amazing in NZ. I could easily feed my family everyday of the year with the fish that I catch. Diving has become more about hunting crayfish (lobsters), scallops and paua (abalone) rather than staring at the fish, but I still enjoy that too.
  23. Yes, I was surprised that I actually had my hands on the holy grail.
  24. My mate asked me to zero his 10/22. Wretched , rusty, uncared for thing. It put tens shots through the same hole at 25 metres.
