I agree get the best bred pup, after all you get what you pay for. But if you have a nice, maybe not best bred bitch, nothing wrong with putting a top quality dog over her to improve her breeding?

Had a lab that did all of the above, but don't be disappointed if yours doesn't hunt as well as a spaniel. Get yourself the type of Lab you fancy ( big strong/ or racey type ) then the rest is up to you, sure you'll be pleased once sitting next to it in a cold, muddy, wet gutter in January!

Alright Dave, pictures are on gun watch, thought they'd come on here automatically! The gun is pretty spotless, think guns about six years old and not fired much more than a thousand shells on driven game only, ( hasn't been fired in last three seasons ).
