  1. Hi Longbower . I tried hades .177 in my BSA ultra and they weren’t accurate enough to use. Last year I bought a gamo gx40 in .177 and the hades pellets (the same ones) were accurate in the gamo gun. It could be the longer barrel on the gamo. I didn’t expect them to expand or flatten l tested them along with other pellets. The pellets I retrieved looked like your pellets with bits of flesh in the cross of the pellets. When I test my zero I shoot at used cartridge cases at the range I will be shooting at. This is a photo of one that a pellet flattened on, I can’t remember the pellet type.
  2. Hi l have used Jaguar steel cartridges in 20gauge . Now not available in U.K. Cartridges made in U.K. will be primer and case and maybe powder from France . Plastic wads and maybe lead from Italy. The box would be from U.K. or China . Then it would be the availability and cost. The manufacturers in this country will be looking at non lead cartridge production with bio wads and we could see more U.K. cartridges made.
  3. Hi sorry l didn’t mean if everyone stopped shooting. When the police license came out in the 60s a lot of guns were handed in or cut up and scraped. Some of my friends stopped shooting and gave me their guns, they were better than my guns. A friend had a good hammer gun he never got a license he cut it up and binned it. I got forms from the police station for myself and my brother took them to my doctors the same day , no appointment needed, he signed them and charged me £1 .00 . I had no advice about the new license the lady in the post office told me l will have to get my license from the police station. The firearms regulations and the higher cost of all types of shooting will effect the numbers of people shooting, or taking up shooting. Some countries don’t allow civilians to hold any firearms at all.
  4. Firearms are prohibited to civilians in Japan , airguns and shotguns are allowed with strict conditions. I started shooting with a gun and dog license from my post office when the post office stopped selling a gun license I bought them from the police. No dog license now. When this happened it was ( the end of shooting and guns) a lot has changed in the world since but we still have firearms. The increased cost of all types of shooting will effect the amount of shooting we do , and the wildlife we will be allowed or not allowed to shoot . There are 1,000s of guns for sale, if people stop shooting there will be a lot more for sale.
  5. Why would it need to be policed, shooters should police it, the conditions will be on the general license required. I don’t do that type of shooting if l did I would just comply with the license. These general licences can be revoked or modified at any time , this one has . A lot of people are looking at what we are doing in the countryside, a few game keepers have found out recently. I don’t know if the license is working or not , it’s not been out long. It looks more like a commercial license to me .
  6. Hi 8shot if lead is made illegal for 22rf it could mean a new rifle. Wilfowlers can choose to use steel proof shotguns with 3 1/2 inch chambers now. Maybe a longer chamber and heavier round could be the answer. As mentioned cleaning the barrel before testing could help with accuracy, I use non lead pellets in my air rifle and l cleaned the barrel before I tried them. I won’t give my guns up until I try the ammunition.
  7. Hi Wild Justice has been in contact with natural England regarding sssi in Devon and game birds and pens around them. The site is special for a type of blue beetle . Also enquiring about the condition of other sssi in the country. This may have something to do with the decision by defra.
  8. Hi silver fox I don’t know the twist rate in the rifling of the barrel . It was discussed on reviews of non lead 22 on a USA website. It seems like a different twist will improve accuracy because of the higher velocity. There are films of testing the different types of non lead on US websites it shows different guns and barrel length have different groups. I will see if I can find any non lead and try them. It may be a case of buying a gun to suit the ammunition.
  9. Hi the men who made the guns would never have dreamed the guns would be obsolete or destroyed by using steel ammunition. It’s the.22rf that maybe obsolete, from what I read we could need a different twist to the barrel to use the non lead rounds.
  10. Hi silver fox, I agree it’s not good lying. I supply pigeons and rabbits ,shot with non lead ,for animal feed and it’s all about trust . Some people feed rabbits (as shot ) to dogs frozen . I use 22 rf . The last 4 weeks I have used non lead air gun pellets for pigeons and a few rabbits I found them ok . If you sell your rabbits you could maybe borrow a air gun and give them a a try. If you supply rabbits for pet feed you may be interested in wild Justice latest survey on dog food (game) containing lead shot. They are asking members to write to the manufacturers about lead shot in the dog food. I’ve shot a lot of rabbits with segmented 22 most will have two segments in them, l give them to friends and they just remove the lead from them. There is non lead 22rf made I don’t know anywhere it’s available.
  11. Hi gbs they are great photos. Hi London best l have a country park/ nature reserve about 400yards from my house there are still English partridge nesting on there. There are ten park/ nature reserves within five miles from me. Not including council parks. The land was used for chemical works, council tips, coal mining and such and made into nature reserves by the council. For many years we have seen short eared owls close and on some of them also long eared owls barn owls tawny owls and little owls. My late friend once made perches near two of the parks and the short eared owls used them and people would watch them. Birds of prey have often been seen, peregrines marsh harrier, peregrines nesting stopped bridge repairs a few years ago. There is a lot of wildlife on these nature reserves around me and the landscape has changed for the better. The council once tried to move on thousands of acrobatic starlings before anyone heard of the word murmuration . Now want to see them. I found wildlife will adapt and sometimes take advantage of the new landscape.
  12. Hi Tobruk last year l filled in a request form at my doctors l think it took a week or two and cost £15 . My friend has a different doctors , same town, who did his form for him with no charge, we are ( senior citizens) could have made a difference. Maybe doctors look at it as a patient’s recreation or just a business transaction. Some doctors may have no idea that some of there patients have firearms. Good luck with your application.
  13. Hi wymberley if you zero your rifle with the moderator on you may have to zero it again if you remove it. When testing different pellets l tried some without the moderator I’m sure they were firing high. I changed from shotguns to air gun for the last six weeks shooting pigeons from trees in a rape field and the last week decoying them on the field., to many leaves on the trees now. I wouldn’t have turned out without a moderator on the gun.My pellets travel about 700ft sc and I’ve not seen anything move out of the way of the pellets. I know what you mean about the (smack ) when hitting your target l often use this to move rooks when one is hit the others move and don’t return, I use 22 rim fire CCI quiets they also travel at about 700 ft sc the same nothing has moved out of the way of them.
  14. Hi speycaster all you need is a hessian sack, a milk crate, and a dozen shell decoys and learn the best way, the hard way. Save your money for cartridges, the more you learn the more you will shoot. Food take what you want, you won’t have to bring it back. We would take a bottle of pop boiled eggs and jam butties one lad took leftover scouse still in the pan. Now l will go to a chippy or call for a takeaway. Good luck with your pigeon shooting what ever you decide to take or don’t take across the fields with you.
  15. Hi rooks are a target species only on gl42. The license states who can rely on the licence, when and where. It has 6 conditions. It’s nothing to do with sporting shooting. If shooting young rooks or destroying the nests or eggs , definition/ reference number 6 explain the serious damage/ normal business risk. This is the part of the license they will ask to explain the reason for culling them. Rope bangers where used at night to deter rooks from nesting.
  16. Hi something different with shot string is on the Gould brothers film called ,creative ammo, shooting tooth picks at a water Mellon an aa battery and bubble gum. These guys know how to have fun with a gun.
  17. Hi blue collar outdoors USA have a new u tube film that might interest 28gauge shooters. It’s called, patterning the mossberg 28 gauge at 60 yards with viper ammunition. They tested a heavier load on another film.
  18. Hi yes use a cartridge that suits you. There’s no rule to say you have to use x weight of shot or x size shot through a 28gauge . It’s the proof of the gun. I would say that a heavy load for a 28gauge was a commercial (rouge or viper ammunition) 2 1/2 cartridge with 1 and 1/2 oz of tss or 2 3/4 cartridge with 1 and 5/8 oz of tss and fired through extra full chokes. If a (modern) shotgun is made to shoot (modern) cartridges I would choose any of them to use and enjoy the shooting. That’s what I do and always have done.
  19. Using a 28gauge can be an advantage, but it would be a preference for a lot of users just like using a .410. . Cartridges have come a long way since the 60s and 70s. Like myself a lot of shooters use a smaller gauge of shot gun in later life. My gun weighs 5lb that’s an advantage for me. I can load my cartridges with tss and match any 12 gauge to kill geese. That’s a big advantage I couldn’t do that in the 60s or 70s . The 28gauge is used more in the USA and a lot more cartridges and loading data is available.
  20. No I’m not a radiographer. It’s the system that the court accepted in wildlife crimes. I would never call anyone anti shooting for helping to convict someone for deliberately killing birds of prey . The cost of the X-ray used in the courts to convict the men was charged to them when convicted so it must be genuine. What these men have been doing is no accident when out shooting and it’s not bad luck they got found out. They are now prohibited from using the General Licenses but the shoots will carry on.
  21. Hi Fellside with 21grams of 6 shot I would say 35yards . I have used 16grams of 7shot at 35yards for pigeons I found them soft shooting, my gun weighs 5 pounds. With the right cartridge and chokes 40yard range should be possible. I once bought different brands and shot weight and shot size 28gauge cartridges from my local supplier and single boxes from just cartridges to try. I didn’t find a bad cartridge but some had more recoil or crack to them. I still have some half boxes of them. I have some home loaded cartridges to test I should put them over the chronograph with them. if I remember some of the European cartridges had a fair crack to them.
  22. The parrot. It’s a digital x ray machine and veterinary software with handy preloaded settings enabling the operator to get a quality image in a single go. Parrot it’s a compatible size/ anatomy. There isn’t a a goshawk setting. I hope this is any help. With other court cases involving killing birds of prey if we did have a license to release game birds at least the shoots involved would have the licence revoked. For me that would be a positive.
  23. Hi Johnny the boy I have used 28gauge as my main gun for twenty years. I loaded my own cartridges and found sixteen grams of lead seven 2.4mm lead or twenty one grams of lead six 2.6mm is all that is needed. The shot count and pattern of the two cartridges are roughly the same. It’s about the shot count with small gauge cartridges the bigger the pellets more are needed for the pattern. You could try a twenty one gram load of six shot for game and the same cartridges in seven for clay and see how it goes. 28g guns are now steel proved and some have seventy six mm chambers . Some guns are on a twenty gauge action . One on its own action is a different gun to shoot.
  24. Hi marsh man I would say it was. Machines now are very efficient and don’t leave much grain on top. I don’t think pigeons do any damage to newly drilled grain fields. We have lots of stock doves on drilling’s, more each year , and jackdaws . I’m still shooting over rape and just started on Lucerne and sprouted beans. I was told pigeons are also going on clover fields. I find pigeons prefer Lucerne and clover when it’s started to grow and more are eating ivy berries.
  25. Shooters given oven ready pheasants now that’s a change. There is a lot less demand for pigeons and game now, l don’t think it’s about to change. I don’t think pheasants will be sold for five pounds a brace for dog or cat food they will use ex layers , it’s rabbits they ask for. Game shooting is often referred to as traditional, as was fox hunting it was even on Christmas cards, when the public hear about game keepers killing birds of prey, another man has been arrested I hope he isn’t a game keeper, and things like stink pits it doesn’t go down well. I hear this from shooting and none shooting people. I don’t know about the proposed regulations for game releases or shooting but wildfowling is regulated, shooting areas ,birds shot ,when shot cartridges used , and bag returns. We have new licences for pest control. l don’t think it’s about the numbers of people saying they don’t want change to game shooting, it’s the reason for no change that will count. I don’t see any positive reasons for no change. This is what shooters should concentrate on more so with small farm types of shoots before replying to the consultation.
