bentbarrel
Hi everyone, What would everyone say is best for regular beating and shooting- waterproof boots and gaiters or wellies? Cheers BB
jojusa
If it's wet & muddy I wear wellies, anything else and it's leather boots.

Cranfield
As soon as it gets wet, I wear wellingtons and waterproof leggings. Its surprising how often you have to kneel down when decoying and there are few things worse than wet knees.
chrispti
If you are going to be doing a lot of walking about for long periods of time then boots are your best bet, as they are designed for support and comfort, breathable, wont come off in deep/sticky mud and your less likely to get blisters
proTOM1
I tend to wear boots and gaiters if its dry but wellies if wet mainly because we have alot of tall sugar beat this year
Blunderbuss
In a pigeon hide or if I'm standing around in the rain I'm happy to wear wellies. But if I've got to do much walking I'll always wear proper boots. I've got dodgy ankles which turn really easy on rough ground, so I prefer the ankle support that leather boots provide when beating. Recently, I've been wearing leather walking boots with gaiters, but the boots themselves are knocking on a bit and aren't very waterproof. I've just had a hunt around in the attic and dug out some Matterhorn military style leather boots I bought from a US PX in Germany about 12 years ago. They're Goretex and Thinsulate lined and as warm as toast. Those with some knee length Goretex gaiters and cheap waterproof over trousers if its really hoofing it down, is ideal when beating
ste
You can get away with wellies all the time, as I do, but thats because I have no other choice at the moment! I saw a pair of aztrek brasher boots in TK Maxx for around £70, not bad if you ask me. Plus they had some karrimor's with vibram soles for a tenner less. Wellingtons and waterproof leggings are a good combination.

Ozzy Fudd
i always wear goretex over trousers now, so during spring and autumn i wear wellies with them, but in summer and winter i wear boots (extra support and warmer than wellies), usually only wear gaiters in winter if its going to be muddy or snowy, and even then its just to keep the goretex trousers covering the boots and stop snow/mud/water getting in
darren m
both -- weather dependant , i always wax up my boots anyways , but sometimes wellies are a must
Westcountryman
Used to wear good quality boots for all my shooting. But if I am shooting twice a week in the wet and mud, I can't be bothered with the post shoot boot cleaning and maintaining. So instead, I use wellies. Boots are used when its frosty or dryish. babka3487
Wellies for me virtually all the time as there's a lot of wet ground around our shoot, but when I know it's going to be dry I sometimes mix it up with the booties! British Army issue ones are very good available in most surplus stores, they come in green or dpm, or, if you really wanna push the boat out then get some Berghaus Yeti's

Dunkield
Anyone able to recomend any good gaiters? The Barbour wax cotton ones. And it's boots and gaitors all day long for me, you get ankle support and if your boots are any good they will keep your feet warm. You only need wellies if you are stood in water over about 6" deep for a while, if you get your foot in/out quickly water won't wick up inside good tight fitting gaitors.
