Lamping with the HMR

Went out lamping last night on one of my permissions, haven't been there for a few weeks due to the weather. Started off in the first field lamp on and there was nothing field still 6" of snow. On to the next field abit further down the bank where the snow has melted abit better lamp on and there were rabbits everywhere. We got out of the Landrover and walked to the corner of the field so I could get into a good position for a couple of shots. 12 shots later and there are 11 rabbits in the bag all shot around the 90yrd mark.

Back in to the Landrover and onto the next field about 100yrd's away lamp on again and a field full of rabbits. I pulled the Landrover into the field this time as there were no sheep in it, rifle out the window and 15 shots later there was another 12 rabbits in the bag most of these were again around the 80-90yrd mark. We stopped there for a quick cuppa before moving off to the next field. We got to the next field and it was full of sheep so we had to walk it. Off we headed up the bank. Lamp on and again quite a few rabbits around. I shot 7 around the sheep feeders and then a further 10 at the other side of the bank.

Back to the Landrover and onto the next field. We were only doing the bottom fields as the top fields semmed to be covered in snow still and there were no sighns of any rabbit movement on them. After a quick shine we could see a dozen or so rabbits so in we went on foot again as there were sheep about. I shot another 7 of them and missed 2 very close range shots about 10yrd's away (yes mate did take the **** out of me for missing them) anyway back down to the Landrover to empty out the rabbits ang get another cuppa weve been here about 2 hrs now and it was still pretty cold up here. Onto the last fied of the night and again there were quite a few about on foot we walked to the far end of the field so the bank side would take any rounds that missed the rabbits. Lamp on and a black rabbit was sitting in the middle of the tracks, Leaning on a gate I let off a shot 125yrds (rangefinder) and it was one very dead black rabbit. These are quite common on this permission as I have shot 21 of them in 2009 on this land. Another quick shine and I shot the last 3 rabbit of the night.

On leaving this field we came accross this big fellow sitting munching away at the tree bark, uncomon as far as I have ever seen but if you saw the damage they have done to the trees up here including the rabbits of course you will know why the farmer has asked me the sole shooter on the land to deal with all vermin and ground game. He was shot cleanly through the heart as I could not get a shot at his head due to the tree. ( and yes it is legal to shoot Hares at night ) all in all a good nights shooting 51 rabbits and a hare will keep me and my ferrets going for a while hope you enjoy the read as much as I enjoyed my nights lamping.

Under the Hares Act 1848,

has been revised more times than most can keep up with.

It is lawful for the occupier of any land himself, or one other person authorised by him, to use firearms for the purpose of killing ground game at night if the occupier has the written authority of a person entitled to kill or take the ground game on their land e.g. holder of shooting rights.

should and will cover him.

Thanks mate, I think quite a few people would be unsure of the Hare aspect and you cleared that up well.

Great post...hoping ot get my HMR next week, hope to be out getting some fluffies then....

do you find the silenced report of the rifle causes the rabbits to scatter, or do you make sure the wind is up a bit and compensate in you aim?

ATB

No matter what mod you fit a 17HMR with you will not get rid of the "crack"! I find that the rabbits are not effected too much by mine which is fitted with a Parker Hale Mod as long as I am about 70 to 80 yards away. The best I have managed is three from a group one after the other. Obviously it is best if there is a bit of wind, preferably blowing into your face to muffle any sound from the bunnies!

Once you get your HMR you will want to "play with it for ages", try it in differing wind conditions while shooting at paper will help you get to know its capabilities. The more you use it the more you will love it!

Hope this helps!

Yea the HMR is loud but depending on the terrain the rabbits dont seem to mind the noise. One one of the fields I took 15 shots only managed 12 rabbits though, by then the rest of them dissapeared but if you wait a while they normally come straight back out. When shooting in an enclosed area like some of the woods on my shoot one shot and a very loud crack and every rabbit in sight has gone, so it all depends on the surroundings of where you are shooting if the noise is going to bother them.
