Not using google earth my mistake, I cant give you the coordinates but they fired off the distress signal very close to Saint Joseph Island, which is about 150-60 mi west of seychilles

edit: you may have to zoom in all the way on the link I gave

Yup found it, 5°24'55.18"S 53°21'29.79"E. Thats a hell of a way from Somali, best part of 800 miles. TBH I would think I was safe there, Id expect trouble within maybe 150 miles of the coast, but you wouldnt think piracy a danger that far out.

I suppose the danger of starting to shoot the pirates is that they become prepared to use force first. Theyve not killed many hostages yet, so the danger is that they srtart getting used to killing them

I don't have a lot of sympathy really, and I wouldn't want any rescue to waste the lives of British servicemen. At the same time I wouldn't wish them dead, foolish though they are.

I do think we should start using these nobbers for target practice though. They'll never be any practical use to anybody, so we might as well start thinning them out :good:

About right, but I would like to think that some of our forces would relish the chance to "have a go" prefareably with weaponry that would prevent the re population by these (self censored) once and for all.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts too.....

On the target practice side of things...

I was struggling with the Islands as well but hey doesn't look far on some maps :good:

People certainly aren't worried about holidays in the seychelles perhaps they ought to be as it would be as profitable abducting them off the beach as grabbing them from a yacht

i can see why people would think that but when you think about it freight ships and container vessels & carriers are always being hijacked on the somali coast.. so they have constant access to ships that travel considerable distances.

at the moment the royal navy arent engaging pirates that they have reasonable cause to believe have hostages in their possession due to this fact that victims of hijackings are rarely killed

edit: of course this is the case for the captain and crews of high value vessels or high value resource carrying ships.. not the case in this instance if the ship wasnt particularly of interest, but the passengers were

Well I never there's a costal town in Africa called East London (just South of Durban). So that's how it all came about :good:

As for the Rambo lot on here who want to send our service people in - why put service men and womens' lives in danger to rescue people who had no sense of danger themselves. Oh there I go again, being all sensible and common sense about it.

why dont we make it open season on the somali pirates? anyone who wants to have a go will be shipped over free of charge, given a gun and 1000 rounds of ammo, and dropped beside the pirates town to clear it out in anyway they see fit :good:

on second thoughts, that actually sounds like good fun.... :hmm:

I'm with Mung on this BUT have to say...why oh why doesn't someone (Brits, USA, EU etc) clobber these parasites (Somali pirates) OR is there something we're not being told and they're just going to be left alone to carry on? These Brits are not the only people to have been kidnapped, killed or threatened so surely it's up to those nations that would police the world to do something about them?

I understand that the Royal Navy do not detain or arrest these pirates in case they claim asylum in Britain. Perhaps the couple were foolish to venture into these waters when they know of the risk, but if as reported a Royal Navy vessel was within sight when they were taken and due to political interference were unable to step in and stop the kidnapping. As regards Q ships or disguised merchant vessels, you cant do that as it would be in breach of the pirates human rights.

my 2 pence worth

i cant see the down side, they are in a nice hot country free board and food, no expense to themselves, plenty of time to relax and kick back, plenty of company. (slight lack of freedom but they are married so they should be used to that)

meanwhile we're all here freezing to death in the snow and ice and -12deg conditions , still trying to pay for xmas credit card bills and working in this gloomy depressing weather. :good:

can somebody pay me a ransom so i dnt have to work for a year or so ?

Thinking about it, the pirates want £3 mil. Why don't the couple adopt half a dozen, bring them back to the UK as newly made up British subjects, have a row, pretend to be up the duff, have an injury and bingo, 6 x free council houses, and all the NHS and sick benefit they could ever want. :good:

Got be worth 3 mil?
