Nial
We had a load of brilliant family holidays round Europe in a caravan when I was a youngster (we started with a 10 ft for 5 of us!). I have a great deal of affection for them but unfortunately the wife's too fond of her 5 star hotels. Nial

henry d
Great fun, but don`t get one with a shower, it`s rare that you will find a site without showers etc. Get out there and visit the Uk !

Dr W
Spent many summer hols as a kid in various caravan sites around Uk and France. Loved it and have many happy memories of it. Still love camping but for me it has to be the canvas (well pvc now) variety and not a caravan, they're a menace to the road system and should only be allowed to travel on roads under cover of darkness (i.e when I'm not on the roads as well). PhilR
Yep, we did the caravan holiday thing when we kids, no showers in caravans in those days and gas mantles for lighting. Always an exciting journey wherever we went, the old man had a Mk 9 Jag and often forgot he had the caravan in tow :o - I don't think there were speed limits for towing then either. When I first got married we used to save money by going camping and graduated to a caravan after a decidedly wet and miserable holiday one year under canvas in Cornwall. Caravan ownership is long gone now after quite a few years of happy holidays even in winter. I do fancy a big motor home to tour round Europe in but SWMBO has her eyes firmly set on 4 star comfort nowadays.
ME
I am not one for roughing it and dont need to travel the UK eating off a travel stove. We have got a static caravan down at Mersea Island where MC lives. (I have heard all the "*****" jokes so save them :o ) We bought it as we were fed up of paying for over priced family weekend breaks at Centre Parcs etc. (our site rent for the year is equivalent to two weekends away at a place like Centre Parcs and we go there most weekends between March and November). The place is safe for the kids as all the people there own their caravans - nobody rents them out and there are no touring caravans. (no strangers about) We have two bedrooms (one with kingsize bed) , separate shower room and toilet, Sky plus, plasma screen TV, heating and all the facilities you would want at home. I will be in Mersea by tomorrow lunchtime and will have a beer in my hand just after ! Here is a picture from a few years ago.

rodp
Yep, got a 16' ABI Marauder, I want to upgrade but the dear wife refuses as she likes this one. Tow with 3.0 td Toyota Surf now the Defenders moved on. As for the cars stuck behind on the lanes, what a shame, my heart bleeds for you
starlight32
I cant help it nothing turns me on like the sight of a nice Caravan being towed by a 4X4, I have plans and asperations I owned and stayed in vans for 8 years on when I working all over the UK. A lot cheaper than B&B's, hotels and I never roughed it....All my vans were new/tidy and my last was a German twin axle 26 footer, central heating end bedroom, satellite and drinks cabinet with a price tag of 18k. Its not for everyone, I only packed it because these days if you pull on a decent site with a 4x4 pick up and a twin axle behind you are classifed as a ***** and you have trouble getting on if they don't know you. Its not for everyone, but I know I had plent of good times in them and would do it again if I ever had the need.
