does anyone phone the local plod to let them know they will be out shooting/ i was out last night clearing some rabbits off local land. the police turned up saying some one had heared me with a gun on land... bloody good ears they have as the nearest house is 100 yds away and i was shooting in the opposite direction with a rimfire with a sak on.. anyway after a lenthly discussion they told me to allways phone in and tell them.. just wondered if anyone actually does this as i can see one downfall in it.

I don't and never will, there is no reason to do so. Everytime I go out on the farm I take a gun, I'm not ringing everytime I walk the dog or go and check my sheep.

I don't most places but if you're lamping near houses in a fairly urban area it can save agro. They take a number and will if they manage to put 2 and 2 together will call you first to see if it is you making the noise etc. Saves both sides time

My phone bill would be sky high! - there is no legal requirement to do so and to be honest I think if everyone shooting did this the police line would be constantly engaged!

only one place I phone in ( had helicopter armed response the lot there once) I ring in now simply to save further hassle plus if I ever have more probs on this farm I can always say "you were told" anywhere else I don't bother mind I once phoned north yorks as I was asked to shoot rabbit on land that divided two main roads, the grief and inquisition I received meant I never bothered to tell them again.

can I suggest a different calling plan :good:

common sense applies, if you're somewhere doing something that is likely to get them called then phone it in. If in a rural back of beyond then don't bother, its a waste of everybodys time if they turn up and you have to explain everything and it ruins your evenings shooting.

As al4x says its all common sense, which is what we are trusted with as shooters. And it all hinges on topography of the land. I've one posh house on one of my permissions and its rabbit city on one of their hedge rows they like me to call first so they can put the dogs in,which I do,and we even chat over the fence sometimes and given them rabbits, always best to do ure best to get on well with people.as for calling the cops,no need I've not many habitations near any of my permissions.

I can see reasons to phone in certain locations but we must be aware that we might get into a time were it is totally expected. How many of us phone the fire brigade to say we are having a barbeque on our back lawn (just incase someone sees the smoke) being silly i know but think about it they must make similar desisions as the cops on priorities . Ok the attitude towards shooters here were i reside means that a call to plod is more likey to get a "yeah so what" responce than an ARV or Hellicopter being scambled, but don't let the cops put the onus on us to report a totally legal activity on our own land

To be honest I can suggest a third idea....just go out if north of the border as the armed response thing only seems to happen in the south....if that's what you need to do then so be it ...jsut out of interest how does the call go?

caller - hello, i'm going shooting in xyz....

Police - ok - how long will you be there?

caller - not sure - depends if i get summit...

police - so if there is an armed crime in the area we won't send any units out because we have had a call to say someone is in the xyz area with a gun...

guess they're not too bothered up here...

but you can be sure if i was the type of person to robb a bank in the south i'd call and let the police know i would be shooting in the area....that way when joe public calls and says they saw someone with a gun it should slow the response down considerably... :good:

Then bill oddie calls plod, "man with gun seen" and they still send out 10 guys armed to the hilt.... :good:

I have to phone plod if its work related, as taking an air rifle on london underground to shoot ferals is lots of paperwork, but it saves armed response turning up trying to shoot me, therefore I use simular principles in my "free time" shooting, in as much as, if the land owner is present on the land or contactable by phone, then I dont, but if they are off out for the day/evening, I then phone plod and book it that Im doing a rabbit/vermin cull, give an approx time on and off, car reg details, my contact details, then ask for a CAD number and a shoulder number, that way, if anyone turns up, this info can be given, and I can carry on, rather than having to stand there, wasting my time trying to explain stuff to plod

thats the point they don't, they call especially if the vehicle reg is given to them as often happens when people report suspicious people. Other forces may be different but herts do seem quite clued up

i've had them call me a few times - each time being very courteous and saying "excuse me Mr Beardo - is that you shooting at farm x, yes, great we'll let the people know that called us", although once i got "sorry to disturb you, have you moved location to disused hospital Y? as we've had a report of someone in a similar vehicle with a rifle, no, ****** we'd better get someone down there then."

And I've had pretty much the same. On a lot of threads for this issue many of the contributors say they there HAS to be an armed response or at least a police turnout of some sort. This proves it doesn't. If the police are aware of you and get a report they'll likely check with you first before tasking a car to attend.

Doesn't happen in all areas but at least it will be THEM getting it wrong and not your fault. On the occasions you do get a response, you'll be sorted a damned sight quicker if you can quote them a log number to check on.

A couple of years ago i was shooting over wheat stubble, as it was nice and dry i took my van, i got set up and it was quite good shooting so i was busy knocking of what i could. Out of the corner of my eye i saw to plod walking across the field, they were about 1/3 in to their trip to my van. So i went out of the hide with the gun broken and shouted to them "It is my van" they stoped i repeated what i said, they waved and turned around and went back to their car!

I can only guess they saw the van and wanted to check it out, but a man with a gun shouting at them seemed to do the trick......

the reason i asked this i because i was reported last night and police came. they told me to inform the police when i was there, so i asked him this question... what if i phone in and say that i will be on land with my rimfire between ,say, 7 and 9 pm, but at 815 i decide to go home.. when i have just left the land a poacher comes and shoots at a couple of rabbits with his rimfire, misses them and the bullets ricochet through someones window, and he legs it. would i be held responsible as i have told you im there..he actually said that i would have to ask this to the flo..

i think best to just have all your permission slips and tel nos with you at all times.

It`s a condition of me hunting on one of my main permissions that i call the farmer and he logs me on the board and i also phone the police and ask for the Dover Coms room who then take my name, contact number, location, vehicle type/reg/make/color, what i`m shooting, calibres being used and approx time of start and finish and could i let them know when i`m done, they give me a reference number and i go on my way. i know they ask for alot of detail but for the sake of 5 mins i`ll jump through the hoops if it keeps any kind of hastle from me.

That was exactly my point - there is no legal obligation and it could potentially cause more confusion.

Each situation has to be looked at on it's own merits.

There is one thing that some of you may not be aware of though. The URN (or whatever it is called in your area) stays LIVE for 3 MONTHS, so don't say you are going "tonight" insist they log it that you may be there day or night at any time for the next 3 months, saves a lot of phone calls!!
