chesterjester
Normally use my 20 bore shotgun for shooting game and pigeon. If I were ever asked, can you kill a fox with a 20 bore, and if so, what size cartridges are recommended? Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

Thanks Ive shot one stone dead with a slow (1150fps) ounce of 6s, broadside at 20yds. I am sure you could extend that range somewhat with a much larger pellet size. Ferret Master
Keep the range pretty short. I have 4 32g no.3 semi-magnum cartridges at the end of my 20 bore belt. But it's far from being the ideal tool for the job. FM
Billy.
You can shoot a fox with an airgun (tin hat) so a 20b will do the job, at a suitable range/with suitable shot
jonesbach
shot a few with my 20g, size 4 pure golds out to 30yrds..stone dead! 3inch mag carts would be good even further.
proTOM1
Yes a 20g is well up to the job ive shot plenty some with 6s and some with 4s as long as you can shoot straight and keep the distances down you can kill mr fox no problems at all
Quist
28g from a 20 bore is no different to 28g from a 12 bore. Same mass, same velocity, same killing power.
Dekers
I shoot a reasonable number of fox every year on all sorts of sites, in all sorts of situations, at all sorts of distances, and with all sorts of tools. The answer to the question is YES, the reality is I struggle to find a situation where it is my first choice. ATB!
Dekers
28g from a 20 bore is no different to 28g from a 12 bore. Same mass, same velocity, same killing power. I think that needs filling out a bit more, more kick from the 20 in those circumstances and unless you were VERY close I would suggest you are best with something over 28g as well, so a 20 is not generally going to be in contention. It will be an opportunist/occasional/specialist location tool, very few will select it as their first choice fox tool, unless that is all they have of course. As I posted earlier, I shoot foxes with all sorts of tools, in all sorts of places at all sorts of distances, I can't remember the last time I thought, 20g, that's the tool for this job! ATB! It depends on what situation you find you're having to deal with. I find a 20bore much faster handling than a 12bore. In and around buildings and other obstacles I find a 20bore really comes into its own for such a task.
GW80
A 20g will kill just as well as a 12. I personally have only shot 1 fox with my 20g an that was with 25g of no.6, had i had my 12g with me i would have been shooting the fox with 30g of 6/7, to be honest i would rather shoot game with my 20 than anything! Easy Bully
20 gauge carts loaded with BB certainly do the job but keep it close in.
Pippin pup
Eley alphamax 20 gauge 28gramm BB, sorted out a very big dog fox just last week. It was running away from me and was about 35 meters away. It was stone dead. Usually use the 12 gauge for foxing though. Regards PP
inthedark
I dont shoot 20 bore, but I've seen quite a few foxes rolled over nicely with 20's on walk up days.
decoy1979
I used to know a keeper that used a 20 bore 222 combo, he could certainly call them in & knock em down.
paddywack12
I shot my first fox when I was 14 using a 20 bore, no problem, it was only about 6 yards away tho
tomaddy525
I use 36gram fours from my 20 and have killed foxes out to about 40. Yards so yes you kan
keeper1984
Shot one with 20bore 28g pure gold 4's at 20 yards. Came out of the cover looked at me turned to run to late. Bang
kent
Range and load dependant - yes. push the boundaries and it wont end well
monster1971
Personally on our shoot I would be upset to see anyone shooting fox with any shotgun with any load further than they can absolutely guarantee an instant kill .in most cases I have witnessed that's no more than about 20 yards ,nothing worse than seeing a fox writhing about on the floor in pain and wounded because some donut is trying to be clever and shoot a bolting fox up the harris at 40 yards with 30 g of no 6,let your conscience be your guide ,as an aside i personally wont shoot foxes with a 17hmr either ,in my opinion I don't think it has the welly
cumbrian shooter
Ideal shotgun would be a 12 with a 3" 50g no3 through 3/4 choke rolls em over nicely! but for a 20 30g of 4s or even 3s. I like to hit em hard if the chance pops up, bigger shot get the job done with confidence and kills well a bit further out Edited December 20, 2012 by cumbrian shooter
Gunneravi
I use 42g no1 with 1/4 choke out to about 25 yds. They certainly don't get up. As long as you can guarantee a clean kill. People on rough shoots hit them at 20 yds with lighter loads I'm sure.
ozzy518
Though I have never used a shotgun on fox I do drop foxes with 17 hmr. Provided you keep the range sensible and put the bullet in the right place they will drop on the spot. Mine all get shot in the nugget and have never yet had either a runner or been alive when I've got to it.
