How many of us are "Obese"?

Obviously I've just done the test. ********!

I'm 31, 5' 10" and 90kgs.

I'm a joiner to trade so I'm very active at work.

I walk my dog at least three times a day.

I don't drink or smoke.

I could eat healthier food so something to think about.

I don't know if this is relevant but I've just stood in front of the mirror reaching for the ceiling and I can count my ribs. (or maybe everyone can)

I would have to lose 15kgs to fall into the healthy category, something that will never happen.

I hope it's all ********.

Anyway, not many have answered the original question............I am overweight but not obese. BMI 28.45

I consider myself overweight. I'm 6ft 4 and weigh 19 stone. The ideal weight for me according to all that BMI rubbish is 14 stone. But I would be very ill if I acheived that weight and look half dead. I'd like to lose a few stone and quit the growlers, unfortunatly they cancel each other out.

Never mind losing weight, just grow taller

I'm 62 next Feb, 6' and 13.5 st, bmi puts me overweight. What a load bull, have had a 34" waist for years and eat like a pig, no junk though :good: . Plenty of excercise humping bags of corn around, out with the dogs and a new "Friend" :D helps.

Just in the process of using up the last of my rollies, then, off the fags. Just have to see what happens with my weight then

Well done Frenchie boy for accepting you are overweight and want to do something about it - my action plan, 'the dog diet' they eat half of your dinner and take out for long walks everysday - sort of works.

I'm 61 6'2" & shrinking 'n' spreading, I was 14.3 st in my teens but dropped to 13.5 st from overseas work & running but have now creapt up to 15 st, I still fit all my clothes but a bit tighter. And only just pass 'the canoe test' I can still get in my old canoe - yrs ago I would only go out with a girl if she fitted my canoe, no fit = too fat, rejected.

like you gave up the fags 30 yrs ago, which is the hardest part so take inspiration from that, what you are doing is right - take on one task at a time.

People are designed as scavengers, so like people surviving we can live on less food than what we think we need. Exercise uses fewer cals than than often assumed eg, running a marathon = a sunday dinner, my daughter does 'iron-man' with little snacks to keep her going for 12 hours & does not loose weight.

My wife eats the same as me but is only 8 st, because she is selective on how much to eat - I just like her cooking too much.

My 'tip' is to look at the cal content of food and eat less of the high cal foods and use fruit/veg to fill up on. I thought I was working hard on the shoot beating but I put on weight because we could do the bag of 200 birds often in less than 4 drives, so the lads brought too many cakes etc and ate them in the beaters truck, so this year I cut down and lost 7 lb so far.

I need to drop a stone so I will try and support you and put down how I'm getting on -

i find it hard to diet,i eat quite healthily but i eat a lot.i'm just over 6'1" and around 18.5 stone, its not all flab as i'm quite a strong active type.the only way i find to lose weight is more exercise,i started to do just over an hours walking each day,it works out about 4 miles.and i've started to pick my weights back up recently.excercising is like an addiction,i used to swim twice a week, kick box twice a week and go down the gym a couple of times a week.i dont do any them things now, like i say exercise is like an addiction,if your hearts in it you will do it.

18.5 stone with all the work out. How much do you put away at a sitting ?

Cut your portions down cut of fats and eat correctly and exercise cardio vascular. You don't have to be in gym 7 days a week grunting and pumping iron. Oh and get out the booze and drink tea. There's plenty of here I bet have very high fat diets and drink far to much alcohol

I'm 6'2" at weigh in at 14st 5 lbs and and my BMI is top end of health but I do swim twice a week and others regular exercises to raise the heart rate :look:

Unfortunately for the people who make millions trying to convince us otherwise, there is no science to this.

The facts are if you stuff more into your mouth then you are burning off, you will put on weight, if you stuff less than you are burning you will loose weight, it's that simple. As all advice will tell you avoid fat, sugar and salt in quantity and take regular exercise and you should be fine.

I haven't been to a gym for 15 years (and only I went then because I was bored) my weight varies I am probably at my heaviest point in the year I am about 12.5st and 5'10" - which give or take a few pounds is pretty much what I have weighed for the last 15 years or so.

I don't care what that makes my BMI, I can still walk up hills/across muddy ploughed fields and drag deer out of woods without getting too out of breath so that is good enough for me.

Oh, and the older you get the less you can get away with :(

My Mrs started going on at me because of my weight ,I had started falling out of the bed in the night . I said it is normal to fall out of bed from time to time , especially after a drink or two . She said " but you are falling out both sides ! "

My wife has just found me an app for my iphone called myfitnesspal. It tracks what you eat and tots up your calories. Put in what you want to weigh, what exercise etc. I used up most of my calories by afternoon tea.

If nothing else it makes you think about what you put in your mouth which is half the battle.

5ft6" and 11st, want to lose a stone.

One thing for the larger members to remember with respect to BMI (I was told this by my Doc, a sensible sort) is that by this measurement means the majority of the six nations players in all teams are clinically obese as the measure takes no cognizance of build or muscle bulk.

I know I am very overweight (fat *** to some) but by this measurement I have been obese since the age of 14, even when, at 20, I was training 4 nights a week playing at least once and later working at an active job on site as well.

If you were skinny as a teenager and now aren't you have more of a problem than if you were always "chunky"

I think that genes have a big part to play.

I come from a line of "big boned" types. My grandfather was and uncles are. We all have wide shoulders and a big chest. Even if I dieted and my waist was less than my chest, I would never be the suggested BMI weight.

About 4 years ago I had a physical job and the weight fell off. I could eat whatever I liked (proper junk food) and still lose weight. Since being back at a desk full time the weight has piled on.

It's a shame that the game season is so short as a long walk beating every fortnight would be great. I can see the benefit of exercise but I believe that life and my spare time is too short to be stuck doing exercise like treadmills in a gym just for the sake of it.

BMI is not something to get hung up on...Im 6'2" and weight 106kg...technically im on the border of 'morbidly obese' despite the fact im in the forces, do CV and weight training 5 days a week, and dont drink or smoke!

My top tips for shedding body fat and subsequently weight are:

Eat 5/6 small meals a day instead of 3 big meals. Start the day with carb heavier food i.e porridge/cereal/toast but try to avoid carbs in the evening. Your snacks between meals should reduce the amount of food you require, and keep your body burning the energy.

When exercising, aim to do a 20min weights session before your CV. This will burn off the energy stores in your body, meaning you are burning fat straight away when you start your CV. For your CV, aim to get your heart rate at about 65-70% of your maximum, as this is your fat burning range (your max is calculated as 220-your age beats per minute) If weights aren't your thing, bear in mind that you don't burn any fat in the first 20mins of exercise so you will need to work for longer.

Mix up your exercises. Don't just do steady state runs on a treadmill-you will soon get bored! Mix different styles of training and locations. Get out and about on a bike, or get someone to drop you off a set distance from home and jog back.

Good luck with the weight loss and if you want any advice on training feel free to drop me a pm.

I am 5 feet 11 inches tall weighing in at about 16 to 17 stone my bmi is just behind your own.

Some of the lads on here know me and will tell you I don't look 16 stone at all, Infact recently I got ####ed off my GF for even MENTIONING losing a bit of weight I was told there is nothing on me.

My ideal weight according to a specialist from a few year back was 12.5 to 13 stone as I have a large frame. My Doctor said I should aim for 11.5 stone

Either way it seems I am over weight. I am a 36 waist and a 46" chest.

Unlike yourself I was never a smoker and am a social drinker having the odd pint but thats as far as it goes. A lot of MY problem lies in I do not have set regular meals. I often have one meal a day which is Tea as my GF works and I get very little time to myself bringing up my Son and skip breakfast and dinner so my Girlfriend and I can eat together in the evening.

Apparently irregular meals are a BIG cause of weight gain. If you set yourself up for a Breakfast it kickstarts your metabolism and when your body KNOWS it's getting meals at said times it works with what it has.

If you SKIP meals like I do your body STORES the energy as FAT as it does not know when the next meal is coming.

I really need to start getting myself back in shape.

Crash diets / low carb diets / atkins diets / all meat diets etc just ignore them!

Check your calorie intake daily and like I say have a set routine and if you need to snack make it an apple a stick of cellery or the like not chips or chocolate.

Also walk a bit more I now leave the car at home and walk 3 miles into town or 2 miles to Tesco a few times a week now. Keep busy take your mind off your hunger.

I have lost weight in the past back in 1997 I went from 16 stone down to a little over 9 stone in 12 month as I got the slimming bug and went way too far with it. I lost so much I was dangerously slim. My family were not happy but to be honest I felt a million dollars.

It took me nearly 4 years to eventually get back up to 12 stone where I stayed for the best part of my early 30s.

2 years back I fell ill while on a boating hol to the Norfolk Broads and was advised not to eat until my stomach was better. I never ate for almost 2 weeks (a cupasoup) and tea's were all I was capable of holding down. I dropped from 15 stone to 12.5 stone in 3 weeks and felt brilliant again totally alert and on the ball.

Of course I am now back to 16 stone but this time I need to plan getting down to 12 stone but doing it the correct way this time and stay the course this time starting out as i mean to go on and carry on with the regular meals and leaving the car at home more often and cutting out certain foods.

It sounds like you already have a good start with your personal trainer but to be fair even things like an hour swimming a few times a week can make all the difference. Walk to work if it isn't too far. Ride a bike etc it's all good stuff.

Unfortunatley for ME I will get no support from the other half as She already made it clear she likes me as I am and she does not want me to change. If you can get your missus to support you it's fantastic and it doesn't always mean you have to cut out certain foods you can find alternatives and still enjoy nights out.

Just take your time and lose your weight slowly bit by bit if you crash diet you simply put it back on and in some cases you put more on than you lose.

All the best and I hope you manage to get to your target!

Thanks for all of your replies, advice, hints and tips, I have learned quite a few things from what you have all said. I got the wife to measure my waste last night and couldn't believe what she said - 40 inches! The reason this has surprised me so much is because I have just weighed myself this morning and our bathroom scales "Which are zeroed and fairly accurate) say that I have managed to drop a pose a little of my flab and am now 84 kilos which means I have lost 2 kilos over the Christmas period which must be down to the daily workouts I am doing. OK some of you might say that 2kg is not much over a couple of weeks but believe me that is a great start as far as I am concerned, if I can lose just 1 kg a week now the "festive season" is over I will be delighted! To understand that you would have to see what I am up against - If you do not want to see an image that might upset you please do not scroll down any further as this photo was taken just last night!

If you think your system can stand the shoch here it is and, in all honesty I wasn't pushing my stomach out for the photo as some of you might think (Please can I just add that this is quite concerning for me so I haven't put this photo up so that I can be the butt of a load of jokes or cruell jibes):
