  1. 1. Should there be an age limit for the forum?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone think that there should be an age limit or restriction on access to the forum or certain parts? There seems to be an influx of younger and younger members which is great but can be an issue in certain circumstances both legal and moral issues.

Under 18's asking for people to buy them cartridges etc

Another forum i use prevents under 18's from using the trading forum as if they agree to buy or sell something there is generally no recourse as one member found out to his cost. With the sort of frank discussions that go on should there be an age limit? To all or certain parts?

I have to admit in never thought of pre teens using internet shooting forums (but then why wouldn't they?) Or perhaps should under 18's just be flagged on the system somehwere?

Something for Teal to consider perhaps.

how would you enforce it? would it be one of those pages like on porn sites where you have to agree to being 18 before going in, when in reality about 30% of the viewers are 14 and desperately horny?

no need for it IMO.

I have to say I'm all for bringing youngsters into the sport, all about bringing them up to respect guns and our wildlife. For someone that has never shot those last few words don't sit easy side by side, its our job to put our views/thoughts up front and help explain why we do what we do.

I'm not saying there should be an age limit on the whole forum but on parts perhaps?

I don't disagree younger members have contributed to the forum, I don't necessarily think they should not be able to see the trading post, the question will arise when something happens and someone looses out or gets in trouble it's easy to think your dealing with an adult when in fact it's a Child at the other end of PM's and emails.

As for enforcement I think a declaration is about all you can do and require a DOB from all members even if it is not publicly available. Seems to work for the porn sites!

i don't see a need for an age limit.i know 50 and 60 year olds that arn't as grown up as some 15 or 16 year olds.all people are different, some are old and wise, some old and stupid, same applias with young folk too.why should all the young'uns get tarred with the same brush?

I don't think age should come in to it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and youngsters might have good ideas and views.

You can normally spot younger people by the way they post. I have seen the odd one who must still be at school pretending to be adult.

I just think the swearing rules should be a bit more relaxed. It's hardly going to offend many people, as it's mainly used jokingly, but if someone wants to have a proper go at someone, they can do it just as easily as a few asterisked words, but probably a bit worse.

I sincerely hope I have never wasted my energy lifting a finger to reply or help anybody who believes there should be an age limit on people using this forum. I suppose people with this mentality also believe that unless somebody in the family already shoots and can teach the youngster in question everything they need to know, then they shouldn't be allowed to shoot. It's pretty safe to say I have learnt most of what I know about shooting from this forum as I didn't have anyone in the family to introduce me to the sport properly and it has been through contacts on here that I have learnt most of what I know. I have certainly come a long way from the 12 year old with access to a spring air rifle when I first joined.

I have been on here since I was 12 (18 years of age now) and during this time I've met well over a 100 forum members at various game fairs, events (some of which I have helped organise) and through private meet ups to go shooting or ferreting. Not once have I recieved a negative comment about my age or the manner in which I post being deemed childish. Infact I can recall Nickbeardo saying at Bisley he thought I must have been a school teacher because he had seen me refer to school on here a few times.

As for the sales section, made my first purchase from there when I was 13. I am still fortunate/unfortunate ;) enough to be in contact with the seller now. He happened to be a chap called Lurcherboy :yp: who packaged and sent the air rifle pump before he had even cashed my cheque. Top man.

Thats my 2p worth on the matter anyway.

FM :)

i can also think of a few (Ferretmaster being the first to spring to mind, though he's getting on now) of our younger members who have really contributed to PW.

I thought you were going to say ferretmaster was being desperately horny...
