crosshair
Reading an article on a farming forum, the Defender does not come up to safety standards and will have to cease production by 2013 by order of the EU. Anyone else heard this ?.

stokie
I think it's time we went to war with Brussels as we keep giving away this country of ours

Albion
All this fuss about crash tests... Defenders can't go fast enough to have a 'crash'. It's more of a 'low velocity close proximity incident'
Maidment78
I think the crash issue is due to the other car involved being destroyed by the defender as they are made of plastic.
Gutty Boots
Heard this a while ago, think it's due to no crumple zones, lack of air bags, no side impact protection system etc. Also in tests with pedestrian collisions you can guess the outcome everytime! Another e.g. of this namby pamby state telling us what we can/can't do!
triscrx
shocking
Beretta28g
The thing is that defenders are relitavily easy to repair and i would imagine that the ones around will keep getting repaired and repaired to keep them going.
HDAV
It may have something to do with landrovers new owners not wanting to invest in the defender now they have lost the MOD contracts, I'm sure EU rules have a part to play in the decision, but there is a replacement code named ICON in the pipeline http://www.lro.com/news.php?sid=
Maidment78
Oh dear, the concept car on the article makes the new version look like a steroid induced Discovery trying to be all off road, will stick with the old design I think. I can not wait to see a new artic lorry cab with crumple zones on it making it EU approved,,,,

HDAV
I'm sure purists felt the sma eabout the Coil sprung flat fronted 90 and 110 when they appeared, can you imagine a landrover without 3 gear nobs and with a flush grill madness!
olim
I look foward to seeing what the new one lookes like, it will either be great ot hated. I wonder what it will do to the price of the defenders when they stop making them

UKPoacher
i recon they stopped making defenders when they put a bloody transit engine in them Yep! What does a guy do on a weekend when the bloomin' thing won't break down or drip oil all over the drive?
njc110381
I read about this production change a long time ago. It's been coming for ages, just not shouted about. I think it's to do with it killing people if it hits them? These days cars have to be pedestrian friendly. If there's one thing I wouldn't want to be hit by that's smaller than a lorry, it's a Defender! They're very hard and very sharp!
Billy.
and very sharp! Not if it's got a nice rounded bull bar
mudpatten
Don`t worry gents, by all accounts the EU will have imploded financially by the date of the alleged cessation of production.
Maidment78
Just had a look at mine at it has plenty of crumple zones all over it, a person will crumple just about any where really by the looks of things so I am not sure what the problem is really. EMT
The replacement is at prototype stage already. Dealers have seen it last week (working!) at a special preview for dealers at battersy power station. Will prob be at Frankfurt motor show. Will be in dealers 2015.
