sitsinhedges
It's illegal and has been for decades, mainly I think to deter idiot poachers after deer. You can't use any archery equipment to shoot animals in this country which is a shame because I would love a go at bowhunting deer like they do in the states. Billy.
I take it your bolts have a little metal tip on the end, which are pointy and good for targets? The proper bolt heads are called broadheads and are designed to inflict maximum damage. Out of interest, have you ever shot a rifle before? Specifically a rifle which is suited to killing a fox or a deer? If you have, you'll probably understand why your UK legal crossbow doesn't fling bolts with enough energy to justify the shooting of large vermin or game - hence why it's illegal. Seeing as this is your fist post, you've started off well Edited July 18, 2011 by Billy.
Kes
Its against the law to use that weight of projectile on a live quarry - apparently it came in under the Deer Act. This Act set the calibres of rifle/energy that could be used in Engand to kill deer. The only issue for me is a crossbow speed * projectile weight equal to the minimum energy required under that Act - apparently not as a hunting compound bow will fire as heavy an arrow at 300 ft/sec, and thats not legal for live quarry. US or Africa for bow hunting. Worth checking the detail of the Act. Cheers Edited July 18, 2011 by Kes
sitsinhedges
I will also add that if you can headshoot rabbits at 75yards with a crossbow there is a place for you in our olympic team

Crossbows have the potential to be more accurate Whoop... Whoop... Oh yeah baby Edited July 18, 2011 by Vipa

HW682
There is another thread running about crossbows already.. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/173529-crossbow-any-info-experence/page__pid__1471857&do=findComment&comment=1471857 The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it an offence to kill any animal with a bow. Billy.
Is there anyone else old enough to remember that infamous photo of the deer with the bolt sticking out of its nose? Ducks, geese, swans, cows... There's been quite a few photos.
sitsinhedges
The simple fact is that the trajectory of these types of weapon are so steep that even to misjudge range by a few yards at 75yards would cause it to miss a whole deer, let alone the head of a rabbit. Catweazle
Whilst we can all agree that hunting with a crossbow in the UK is illegal, it's worth mentioning that the killing power of a broadhead arrow is much more than the kinetic energy figures would suggest. A broadhead cuts lots of blood vessels and passes right through most quarry leaving two routes to bleed out. I'm not condoning hunting with these, just pointing out that they shouldn't be compared with rimfires of the same power.

njc110381
I think the OP get's the idea that it's not legal. And lets be fair, why would someone who shoots with firearms know the law regarding bows? It was a simple question that has a simple answer - no need to insult the poor guy! It's very easy to jump on your high horse and hand out silly comments but let's think about this for a moment. Not everyone knows everything! At least he had the sense to come on here and ask rather than assume. Give the guy some credit.

A google search as to the effective hunting range of a crossbow will give you numerous examples where the reasonable range for a deer sized target is considered to be half that stated distance so it's not unreasonable to point out that the chap is probably very talented if he can hit a rabbits head consistently at 75yards Or maybe he meant 7.5yards :yp:

Paddy Galore!
shame it's illegal, i wouldn't mind a go. Used to have a small compound bow when i was a kid and spent hours in the fields shooting straw bales. I think the law needs revising on some of this, maybe not for large deer, but certainly up to roe size. bruno22rf
I think that watching a bucketfull of fat yanks shooting deer with bows/crossbows on youtube will remind us why it was outlawed-our world has moved on.
