barraboy
Baikal 12 gauge MP153 Semi-Auto new Shotgun (R/H) Licence: Shotgun, Barrel: 28", Choke: Multi Chamber: 3"1/2" Description: New Baikal MP153 camo ideal for use on the marsh or for vermin control. Will cycle anything from 24 gram to 64 gram or should i go higher with this Browning 12 gauge Maxus (Infinity Camo) Semi-Auto new Shotgun (R/H), £980 Licence: Shotgun, Barrel: 28", Choke: Multi Chamber: 3"1/2" Description: New Maxus Mossy Oak Break Up infinity camo with 28" barrels specifically looking for a gun for the saltmarsh, my other guns are all berettas but wonder can i justify paying so much more for an xtrema 2 just to take it onto a muddy estuary.was thinking the maxus but then saw the baikal is this a wiser buy or should i just save up more and get an xtrema?. all advice opinions appreciated. thanks
Scully
Only you can answer that really;you have to weigh up the utility against the 'beauty'.Do you regard your guns as tools or something to cherish?Would you be happy using something purely for its practicalities rather than its aesthetic appeal? There again I quite like the look of guns which have obviously seen some 'action'.I love the guns that 'fowlers display at game shows etc, even big clunky old 10 bore autos with worn receivers.I think you'll go down the aesthetic route(as I would)as I get the impression you like the look of your guns. I know I often advise people about re-sale values when buying a gun,but I never consider it when buying for myself. If I like something then I'll get it,even a rattly old Breda. mudpatten
From the experience of shooters close to me and what I`ve seen with my own eyes, the Maxus and the Baikal are in different classes. The Maxus is light, well balanced, has an adjustable stock and is a modern design. The Baikal has none of these things. Not knocking them, they are made of good quality steel but are weighty, cumbersomely muzzle heavy, old fashioned and have no stock adjustment. If it fits you, great! you`ve got a good gun. If it does`nt, there is nothing you can do about it.

figgy
Have a look on you tube at the baikal mp-153 a Canadian puts one through it's paces. Very impressive and I can't see a browning or beretta taking the mud and dunking this gun gets. Very rarely see them for sale used, or hear of any faults with them only good reports on reliability . ziplex
specifically looking for a gun for the saltmarsh, my other guns are all berettas but wonder can i justify paying so much more for an xtrema 2 just to take it onto a muddy estuary.was thinking the maxus but then saw the baikal is this a wiser buy or should i just save up more and get an xtrema?. all advice opinions appreciated. thanks I thought that when I decided on a Benelli M2, the Franchi Raptor was a lovely gun but it didn't like the foreshore I realise the Benelli isn't one your looking at but from experience giving it a bit of a pasting on the foreshore I can say hand on heart it appears immune to any ammount of abuse, if you want 3 1/2" chambers is a SBE worth adding to your list to try? Having said that the Baikal looks like a no brainer if you're on a budget

Simon123
The baikal and maxus are great guns, but up to you on which you prefer , personally i dont think the xtrema is worth the extra cash
Catweazle
Why not handle a Beretta a400 Xplor Unico ? When I picked one up I had to have it It's booooootiful. It cycles almost anything from 2.5" to 3.5" ( exceptions being 21g clay loads and Hushpower Subsonic ). It weighs as much as a side-by-side, but even with 50g shells it doesn't kick much. The second was a big improvement on the 1st, would be interesting to see a new one

utectok
Id go second hand for shure I bought a benelli SBE which is pretty awesome and cost me 980 I believe in the states these are the most used SA for wildfowling as the inertia action is supposed to be most indestructible
Kes
Just to complicate things for you, I have a beretta extrema (1) which I've had from new. It was bit expensive but it has been a superb gun. Never failed to cycle anything from 24 to 60 gram loads. Gell Tec recoil pad is brill. Stock length and recoil adjusters, multichoke. I've used and occasionally abused it and its still the one I would have anyday on the geese and for pigeons. If a beretta suits you then find a good gun shop and ask for them to keep an eye out for a beretta extrema 1/2 and buy after trying and meeting your budget. You wont be dissapointed as a Beretta owner, 10 to 1 it will fit perfectly as mine did. ( Other gun is a 687). There aren't many about secondhand and that speaks for itself? Dekers
You will love your first shotgun whatever it is (Hatsan excluded of course). Buy whatever you want and can afford, you will learn a lot, and it will give you time to save up and buy something more suited for your chosen pursuit! ATB! PS I love Berattas and have a stable of them, but it must be said they do NOT fit everyone, and my 686 Sporting Special, which I inherited from my Father is a beauty, but it just doesn't fit me, many have used it, many have offererd me for it, but it stays regardless! Redditch
I bought the Beretta A400, beautiful gun, not regretting it a second, but don´t know if I´d take it onto a salt marsh though LOL. For general waterfowling and rough shooting, or even clays it´s the mutts nuts Edited August 4, 2011 by Redditch
0145wirbelwind
I would go for a beretta any day . I got a 391 in january this year and i love it. It has never missed a beat, it so easy to shoot and it seems to weather
