TRAMADOL

These were hailed as a wonder drug when they came out but can be really nasty when you have to stop them . We used them alot at work but the elderly could become confused and the nausea can be bad too . I think they interfere with the Serotonins in your brain ( feel good substance ) which has implications for making you feel particularly good then lousy afterwards leading to issues of dependence . Thing is , if you need pain relief then you need pain relief . Pain itself is demoralizing and debilitating . There is very little help at hand for people having problems with prescription painkillers .

Crikey IM on 8-10 Tramadol a day buddied up with at the same time either paracetamol or ibuprofen my choice I alternate so my body doesnt get to use to the same cocktail and 2 Arthrotec 75 as well and along with the 3 inhallers, its what keeps me moving and breathing, I would be ********* without them.

Under doctors orders of course

I lost a vertebrae in 2003 and was on Tramadol for a few months. I had large boxes of the tablets - half a cupboard full. It is hard to say how effective they were as I was still in pain, but the side effects were never drawn to my attention. Three trips to the hospital - including one blue light job - were enough to put me off them.

On discharge from my last spell in hospital, I went from Morphine to a Morphine substitute - some kind of syrup - to nothing at all. I won't take painkillers nowadays - certainly not Tramadol.

Tigger, do you get oromorph on prescription?

thought it could only me given in hospital!

My daughter got Oramorph for intense abdominal pain caused by her chemotherapy, but the hospital were VERY reluctant to give us any home... In the end, we eventually got two doses home in a bottle

Not sure how it is for adults, though.

They worked a treat for me when I came close to separating my shoulder a few years ago but I was not on them for too long and did not take them on a routine basis, instead only when the pain became unbearable. I was off them within three months which coincided with my anterior, medial and posterior deltoid muscle nerves reconnecting by themselves.

I now carry some on all my foreign trips and more extreme pursuits, especially when on my own and needing to have something that could make the difference should I come unstuck.

I was aware of some issues with side affects as they made my mothers breathing very shallow when she was prescribed them but not to the extent described here.

I sincerely wish anyone needing them long term a speedy relief from their suffering.

They are a respiratory depressant so can slow you breathing down and I severe cases cause asthma attacks and other respiratory problems so I'm told I have not had such problems but I can assure you I am dependent on them, I remember our last holiday was to the Maldives I thought I had taken enough with me but picked up one packet with only one strip in on the last couple of days I realised I did not have enough I was like a caged animal lol I was on a tiny island miles away from anywhere so no chance of getting any on the planes home we were delayed 7 hours then a 11 hour flight home I was wild my woman thought I was gonna flip and jump on somebody or something then a 3 hour drive home I won't make that mistake again I can tell ya

  • 8 months later...

bringing up an old thread...

I've been on 200mg a day for three weeks after a serious head injury at work and yesterday I decided to stop taking them... its ****.

I wasnt too bad yesterday but on waking this morning, Im sweaty and restless, very grumpy and ,for some reason, feel very anxious!!!

I never relised it was as bad as this after a short time on a small dose

It is unpleasant stuff. It effectively killed a mate of mine - he was prescribed it for back pain and despite knowing how addictive it can be (he was a mental health nurse) he took too much and became dependent. This resulted in him fitting regularly and eventually after a couple of years he was found sadly having died as a result of these fits. RIP Darren.

They are known as "jellies" in the dark world of recreational drugs.

Useful as a powerful painkiller but need to be very carefully monitored.

As a very much self confessed addict to tramadol (9years plus)I am now happy to say I'm free :yay:

For the past 4 or 5 weeks Iv'e been comming off from 8-10 a day to nil since mid week last week. For as much as they helped me to cope with pain,I'm glad that it is finally done with. The past while has been a living hell, why don't they tell you this before they get you hooked on them, and this can be in less than a week.

The side effects of withdrawal are shocking, headache, sweats, shivers, itchy skin, flu symtoms, runny nose, sneezing, shortness of breath, loss of energy, loss of appetite, squirts, insomnia the list goes on, and Iv'e felt them all but have few now.

You have to come down small bits at a time every couple of days, but you will suffer, really suffer. It's the first time for almost 15 years I have been drug free :yahoo:

I don't think you are alone in America having a problem with pain killers.

Americans consume EIGHTY percent of the world's pain pills as prescription drug abuse epidemic explodes

By Michael Zennie

Americans consume 80 percent of the world's supply of painkillers -- more than 110 tons of pure, addictive opiates every year -- as the country's prescription drug abuse epidemic explodes.

That's enough drugs to give every single American 64 Percocets or Vicodin. And pain pill prescriptions continue to surge, up 600 percent in ten year, thanks to doctors who are more and more willing to hand out drugs to patients who are suffering.

As more people get their hands on these potentially-dangerous drugs, more are taking them to get high. Their drug abuse leads to 14,800 deaths a year -- more than from heroin and cocaine combined.

I used it for about 6 months after having bad reactions to Amitriptyline,

The Tramadol was far better for me,

I then had 2 back operations (taking Tramadol between the 2) after that I was put on Oxycontin for the complications that happened after 2nd operation.

Both doctor and surgeon suggested staying on the Oxycontin (still on 2 twice a day)rather than going back to Tramadol

I never had any bad experiences with Tramadol though, maybe I was just lucky?

The Amitriptyline on the other hand totally zombied me out. wont ever go on them again.

I took TRAMADOL a few years ago but I'd loads of side affects with them, them the hospital put my on Zamadol ! they said they were related and I've been on them for over 7 years now along with Morphine slow release patches for a sever back problem, I've DDS which rots your discs away slowly, I've 3 gone now and another 5 in the process !

I just can't do without any of my drugs or I'm off my feet with not bein able to breathe, sickness, headaches, dizziness and a lot of others that have been mentioned. I know these drugs effect my way of life (if you can call it that) and it wrecks my shootin with double & blurred vision.

I'd love to get off all my scripts but I'd be off my feet too

I spent the last 6 years of my working life (until retirement in 2004) as a specialist nurse running heroin and opiate detox programmes. When it comes to withdrawals, Tramadol is heroin, as far as your body is concerned. Symptoms of withdrawal are the same and if you are on a high enough dose, will last as long. The drug should be withdrawn slowly whenever possible and you should have been informed of the potential effects of withdrawal, if this is done, you should have no problems.

Don't get me wrong, it is not a bad drug for pain control, but needs managing carefully. I have detoxed quite a few people who, like you, have become physically dependant on opiates as well as opioids in prescribed form, you have my sympathy for what you have gone through, and my admiration for coming out the other side sane! (well, as sane as the rest of us here  ) Welcome back from the dark side! :good:

Try coming off Oxycontin, Oxycodone and Tramadol.

I was on them only for about 4 months when i shattered my leg but after that time i felt more sick than i felt pain. Id had enough and i didnt wein myself off just decided to stop taking them. For the next 2 weeks i felt continually nautious and at night my head would spin in my dreams an i wake up with the room still spinning, and that lasted for a few hours. All this went on for two weeks, i'd wake up praying that it was over!

I'm on 8 a day for back pain due to my slipped disc, I get the nausea and dizziness too but the doc gave me some anti sickness pills to counteract that, I don't think I have any of the other reactions that have been mentioned but have noticed I have itchy skin a lot now that some on here have mentioned it, wouldn't be without them though, the pain is horrendous.
