ack-ack
Had a rather lengthy discussion about Branson the other day. What a cracking chap he is! He's my nomination. Who do think is worthy of the shortlist?

Thunderbird
I do think Stephen Fry is a bit of a national treasure despite being a confirmed Friend of Dorothy. I imagine in all seriousness it's someone we've never heard of (and in all likelihood will never hear of) who selflessly does loads for other people and who should probably be given a bit of what that total waste-of-air drut Jonothan Ross earns. welsh1
This man must be on the list, From wiki Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 3rd Baronet, OBE (born 7 March 1944), better known as Ranulph (Ran) Fiennes, is a British adventurer and holder of several endurance records. He is also a prolific writer. Fiennes served in the British Army for eight years including a period on counter-insurgency service while attached to the army of the Sultanate of Oman. He later undertook numerous expeditions and was the first person to visit both the North and South Poles by surface means and the first to completely cross Antarctica on foot. In May 2009, at the age of 65, he climbed to the summit of Mount Everest. According to the Guinness Book of World Records he is the world's greatest living explorer. Fiennes has written numerous books about his army service and his expeditions as well as a book defending Robert Falcon Scott from modern revisionists. -Mongrel-
This is too broad a question, you can't pick just one man to cover all bases. I mean, as greatest explorer you would have to go with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, greatest entrepreneur is probably Branson, greatest living British Actor, I'd nominate David Jason, sportsman? Sir Steve Redgrave etc, etc. Many of the other names mentioned are top lads in their field, but I don't think you can choose an overall greatest Brit.
