Dr W
You seem to get a lot of car for your money on the used car market and I was jsut wondering if any of the PW massive had ever owned one and what it was like? I reckon following on from Top Gear the other night we should have a poll for most interesting used car you can buy for £7k?
Chr15j
I have had a good look at the phaeton (due to my job). It's a lot of car but at the end if the day when your new budget is that high would you really want to stare at a vw badge?
Beardo
For £7k, why not, though I dare say running costs might be high. It's not much to spend on a motor, my Passat cost that and its a brilliant car. You could pick up a classic 911 carrera or 928S4 for that price now, that would probably be my fun choice. Chr15j
Or get an a8, s-class, xj...
M.I.A
BMW 7 series would be a better option
Gully
Merc 560 SEC whoever mentioned 911's was right. The 80's cars are starting to go up in price now. The right models will be worth a lot.
Beardo
BMW 7 series would be a better option My old man has an old 750iL 5.4-V12 - absolute monster but lovely to drive. You can pick them up pretty cheap now, but my god are they thirsty.
M.I.A
I had a 730D and I will admit it wasn't great on fuel but wasn't that bad, the phaeton won't be much better, both great big lumps. The 7 series are cracking, plenty of toys and still look like a 30k car
Dr W
Some interesting thoughts. Wouldn't want a 5l monster but a 3l diesel something does appeal. Would never buy a new car due to the amount they lose but you can pick up some great cars drive them for a while (assuming nothing goes wrong) and sell on again without loosing too much money (if any). I thought an 80s XJ V12 Jag might be fun for a while, perhaps a summer car.

Mungler
My brother had the nutty W12 Phaeton and said it was the perfect car apart from the fuel consumption and that it looked like any old rep car. It was quick and with every toy. I think even the diesels give a terrible mpg. I have been looking at changing my car in line with a mid life crisis. The problem is that I just can't contemplate leasing (waste of money) or physically parting with more than say £15k but more likely £10k (my business partner 4 years ago bought a 650i BMW for cash and has currently done at least £25k in depreciation). My research is as follows: 1. The maddest car you can get for £10k is the imprezza turbo. There's a 57 plate 1 lady owner with less than 20k miles on auto trader for £8k 2. £12k gets you the limited edition gb270 imprezza in a 1 owner with 25-30k on the clock and the choice of saloon or estate car that will do an M5 3. The 6 series BMW or merc Cls is great value; the most sensible option is £11k on a diesel Cls - look at the performance and economy stats, amazing 4. The quirky option would be the top of the range citroen c6 turbo diesel - every toy, great buy 2nd hand and the whiff of academic as opposed to rep (3 series BMW, c class merc or any Audi you care to mention)
Paddy Galore!
i like the phaeton, the thing is, the kind of person who buys one doesn't care about the mpg, how about a nice old rolls though?

Mungler
Got any more info like previous owners, last mot recorded miles and what damage is there inside? I bet a new steering lock, cowelling and pair set of keys would be over £1k. The current bid is 8 something but 10 or less and that's a runner. Exactly the same as my partners but he coughed £45k for his about 5 years ago - bought it as a 1 owner off a client with f-all miles. Good motor - lots of torque grunt, fair mpg and good build quality
Tam
Got keys & starts/drives - reposessed clone LOL, I beleive the mileage to be genuine but we found a service book inside with no vehicle details with a different mileage  just covering our aris HPi shows no iregularities lot of car for that wonga

jacksdad
Phaeton is indeed a huge lump of car once the depriciation has stopped, I would certainly have one, but first choice must be a Mercedes S600, one or two now appearing in the price range! Dr W
Now I would love an impreza as you get a very quick car for not huge amounts of cash but as I'm not 17 or a boy racer anymore I don't really want a stupid spoiler, can you get without? I want something quick, comfortable, that I'm not going to lose £'000s in depreciation on, needs to be practical to use every day and plenty of space. I actually probably need an estate maybe like a Merc or BMW but don't look as good.
