cloudwalker
In over 25 years of Pigeon shooting I have never seen the rape so tall and well established at this time of the year. All the fields I look at seem to be a solid mass with very few bare patches. Even the tram lines are growing over. What I'm wondering is whether the pigeon will actually be able to land and feed on it this year, especially if we don't get any snow. Any thoughts? Mightymariner
I guess it means pigeons will find fields that aren't as far advanced and hammer those. They will always find something to eat. It may mean easier shooting if they ignore well grown crops and concentrate on shorter rape, providing you have a mix of this on your land. fenboy
I am sure that a few frosts will nock it back and the birds will soon be feeding all out on it and when they do its not long before its almost back down to the ground. Zapp
There is a field near Kettering on the A14 that is in flower.
Catamong
There is a field near Kettering on the A14 that is in flower. No it's not, that's a weed known as Charlock with a yellow flower, a few good frosts normally kill it off. Cat.

Hamster
Well, ask your Farmer how soon he'll be combining it then. Cat. August  The highish rape is probably due to the mild weather this year but it won't matter when they start hitting it properly. The favoured bits will soon get thrashed nice and low for the decoys to show up on.
deadliestdecoy
yep a fortnight of good frosts will soon take it down abit, just when they turn up :hmm:

cloudwalker
I am hoping you are right about the frosts knocking it back. I think we will need some hard frosts over a period of time to slow it down a bit. Not that any are forecast in the near future. So much for the heavy snow everyone was talking about for October

I'm sure he'll confirm it's a weed, pure and simple, that'll be gone as soon as those frosts start to bite. Cat
yickdaz
like i said i don,t shoot this field and don,t know the farmer. but i,m gonna prove my point if it kills me or the cat compare this pic i copied from flora and fauna,on wikpedia basically looked up rape flower on there and this is the pic i found. so compare it with the pic i took today four yellow leafs on both plants

Cyffyllog
Not intended as a knock but a 'Rape Flower', it certainly is. At home here in North Wales the small Rhodedendron Bush in the garden is breaking into flower and also other seeds are bursting into leaf, strange autumn, no frosts as yet here either. It will draw them back when (if) it comes.
unapalomablanca
I posted 'flowering rape' and people belittled me and said it was this weed charlock. I got out of the motor for a closer look and the flower was part of the rape plant. I think yickdaz saw what i saw!
sitsinhedges
Loads of rape in flower around these parts. It doesn't seem to know what time of year it is but the winter will knock it back soon enough.
pegasus bridge
i have seen two fields of rape in flower - (i also dont shoot on them - but got out of the car to have a close look) - definitley rape - if anyone local wants a look - its off occupation lane in Fiskerton. will this wreck the crop? will it stop it growing when we get some hard frosts/snow? Catweazle
I saw some flower today on a new permission. Didn't have a camera with me so brought a bit back. It certainly looks like rape. It also looks like Charlock Edited November 5, 2011 by Catweazle
