Gimlet
Sepp Blatter has caused outrage (admittedly mostly at the BBC) for suggesting rascist insults exchanged in the heat of the moment on the football field should be resolved with a handshake. Apparently there are people in positions of authority and allegedly of sound mind who think such 'inappropriate' incidents warrant police investigation. I'm no football fan, and Blatter, I have no doubt, is as bent as a bed spring, but even I can see that he may inadvertently have said something thoroughly sensible. What the hell is all the fuss about?

I think he will rip your head off and **** down your throat. Blatter is an ********.
-Mongrel-
Really? It's sounding as though it may have been confusion and heat of the moment reactions. I'm not convinced JT would have played for and captained England last night if he was under serious investigation. As for what he is alleged to have said, you'll hear worse on any building site or school playground any day of the week. It may not be right, but the response has been disproportionate. All that's potentially needed (if guilty) is an apology, a witch hunt is not needed but no doubt our perfect press will continue with one. I think JT was given the captaincy because he`s innocent until proved guilty. I`ve no doubt the law will come back with a no case to be answered. Vince Green
I do think racism has become too much of a knockout issue. It seems not only in football, people can get away with all sorts of bad behaviour all the time but one hint of skin colour and it gets this much publicity and discussion. Its not that important, sure he shouldn't have said it but there are a lot of things he shouldn't have done that I think were worse.
Mungler
I don't care how this one plays out. Nancy over paid footballers getting upset with some name calling -vs- Captain corruption himself It's a Charlie Sheen win win situation
Gimlet
What astonishes me is that the police are investigating name calling. We're treading on eggshells over this issue. Social squeamishness over race creates a wide open target for people who enjoy causing offence for the sake of it. To cause or incite physical or material harm is a criminal matter, but the best way to treat a name-caller is to laugh at him. Taking him seriously encourages him, derision makes him weaker. When I was a kid we learned that in primary school. Grow up.
BenBhoy
the difference between hearing it on a building site or on a football field is the hundreds of thousands of people who are watching the football and the people, especially kids who look up to these players. i agree that at times it can be all to easy for someone to cry out about it, but the truth is that you should not be derided or singled out for being a colour or nationality. if your in debate with someone and you have to turn to pointing out the colour of their skin then i think it shows a serious lack of intelligence. They kick a football about a pitch for £100k a week, buy Bentleys and have them sprayed pink and will spit roast anything that will stand still long enough. Who cares? What does anyone seriously expect from them? If you look at half the club squads, if they weren't playing football they would be inside
Raja Clavata
Save perhaps the KKK, it's not the sort of comment the head of a global governing body of any organisation should be making.

What the hell is all the fuss about? I'm with you on this one the real problem is to much Media we have twenty four hour rolling news and most of the time nothing new for them to talk about so the slightest thing is turned in to a big deal just to give the news readers something to talk about other than Banks and Politicians. unapalomablanca
I asked one of my customers if she had ever suffered this rascism. She said she had been here 45years and never had once. I often ask black people the same thing and most look at you in a quizzical way and either say no or just laugh. The media is full of left wing extremists who love to stir and cause unnecessary aggro. If you think about it the idea of actually being a rascist is pretty ridiculous, how could you rationally dislike someone because of their colour? The only grounds you can have for disliking a group of people is if you find their behaviour offensive or wrong. Hitler was a true rascist because he hated people of all colours and races because of how he perceived their behaviour. If i went to live in africa tomorrow i would expect a bit of flak for my colour but im sure i wouldnt take it too seriously.

-Mongrel-
... i think it shows a serious lack of intelligence. Let's be honest, that sentence would apply to 90% of Premiership footballers. People are generally academically inclined or physically, less often both. Footballers aren't paid for their IQ. So why be surprised if they act poorly, especially when they have a lot of money and not enough sense to handle it.
poontang
Let's not forget the England rugby teams recent antics in New Zealand, and the repercussions following them. Seems like you don't have to be a footballer to act like a total tool.
Vince Green
There is always going to be an element of "racism" in international football because one countries team is playing another countries team. Carry this through to the silliest possible extreme and somebody will one day start claiming that fans chanting "England, England" are behaving in a racist manner. The point I am making is that its there in the mix already, you are never going to remove it completely. Its commercialised national rivalry. Where are they going to draw the line? What would happen if the England Captain called a French player a Frog or a German player a Kraut?
vole
Having been on the receiving end of racism I used to have the attitude of " give them some back " . It does tend to arise from less educated , hung up and chippy quarters so on the whole I prefer to be on the side that tries to be decent and fair , such values are an aspect of our history and a reason to be proud . I found being called Honky , White Trash etc quite funny , it was just the knives that made me a tad uneasy . Blatter sensible ? Call someone a coon then shake hands and say no hard feelings ? Give us a break .
