steve_b_wales
Hi Darran. Welcome to PW. Get yourself a .22LR as this is a very versatile caliber. You can use sub sonic (Winchester SuperX are good) A CZ 452 rifle is also a good choice and excellent value for money. Steve.
Livefast123
Simply put, it depends what you want to shoot with it and what you have good reason to have Some .22 rounds are far more powerful than others. I'm just applying for the .22lr as I only have small pests to control! Edited January 6, 2012 by Livefast123

I have a CZ 452 american and I cant fault it. great gun, great accuracy, great price and its reliable. There are lots of these second hand flying about too. Ive seen some including moderator and scope for as little as £250. Good luck with what you choose.

libs
Another vote for the CZ452. There is a reason so many have them, cheap, reliable and accurate.

Blunderbuss
I'm a big fan of CZs, I have one in .17 HMR and have owned an old BRNO 2E in .22LR, the only down side is every one has one! Only because they're accurate and superb value, I know. However, if you fancy something a little different, at least as accurate and a little bit classier, I'd recommend a Weihrauch HW60J
pat g
Hi there, the CZ's are a fine rifle and you wont go far wrong, however if you can get your hands on a Sako Finnfire you will have a rile that is the Dogs Danglies . They are IMO and probably a fair few other shooters on here, one of the best,if not theeee! best .22 rimfire rifle ever produced. You can pick them up for between £450-£600 approx but they are becoming like hens teeth ATB, Pat
bedwards1966
I would suggest a .22lr, with subsonic ammo, it's quiet, effective and accurate. And another vote for the cz 452, you really can't go wrong with them, reliable, accurate and cheap, great value for money. Or a BRNO mod 2, same thing just older. Newsportshooter
The P94's are a joy to own if you can find one for sale. +1 for the mighty Finnfire (.22lr) absolute pleasure to use.
ollie
Get a .22lr, everyone has one because the ammo is really cheap so they are good for plinking targets, they are a very effecient rabbit tool out to 80 yards or so and it is a great starter rifle to work your way up. I have a CZ452 Style, 16" barrel with a wildcat mod. If I was to buy another CZ I would look at the new Thumbhole editions; however, this is because I love Thumbhole stocks. bonzobear
Im going to be using it for pest control on a farm but also up the range which is 100m long.
Dekers
If you are talking general field use, there will be something in the CZ range to satisfy your requirements, with regards rimfires and field work you will never NEED anything more than a CZ, a time may come when you may just want something more! .22lr and .22WMR are very different animals, you will need to decide what best suits your requirements and justify that to your region! Drayman
CZ .22 bolt action just works ... and works ... and works. Just keep the bolt clean. Barrel - most folks just leave them alone and rarely clean them. If you get a 2nd hand one make sure the barrel is floated (doesn't touch the forestock) - easy to do yourself - and it is properly screw cut. Sort the trigger for creep if it hasn't been done (Brooks kit) - easy to do yourself If its a long barrel have it shortened to about 16". Much easier to use in the field with moderator. Work out which ammo suits it best - they aren't all the same. And then figure out what you are going to do with all the rabbits. It looks a basic tool and it is - but it's very reliable, does a very good job, and if it takes the odd knock it doesn't hurt too much. Any veiws on savage rifles? Cheers all. Personal views all round, I'd never buy a Savage except possibly a Heavy Barrel CF Target tool, but seeing as I don't want one I would NEVER buy a Savage. Others will tell you how wonderful they are, personal opinion......... Turn it round, why Savage, why heavy barrel, why laminate thumbhole? pat g
Easy answer there, buy a CZ in 17HMR . Simples . Seriously mate you wont go wrong with a CZ in both 22 and 17HMR. Savage? well whatever rocks your boat i suppose. Never owned one so in fairness i can't comment. I you truly fancy something different in HMR the have a look at the Anshutz or a Wheirauch ATB, Pat

Thanks to all i'll keep you posted as to what I get. Cheers guys. have a look at a sako quad little more expensive, but in my eyes worth every penny. crackin rifle. My mate uses a savage in 17hmr and it just keeps going and going, accounted for hundreds of rabbits.
