lucas
does anyone use a van rather than 4x4?
ferguson_tom
Not for shooting but a friend has one and is a plant operator and he drives his berlingo van over virtually everything, wet fields, wet mud, ploughed fields etc I am always surprised at what it can do and how robust it is as he gives it a really hard life. I think the trick is none of this low range gearbox, locking diffs ******** just point in a straightish line and boot it.
mrwabbits
Not personally, as i have a defender for my own reasons, but i know a work colleague who does and his preference is always a small van. Go to France + europe and thats all you will see parked up at weekends in the countryside (little white vans dotted everywhere). Word of warning when in France, if you see a little white van parked up, dont go exploring the woods at a weekend unless your part of the party , they shoot anything that moves Oh, and If its a Big white van and maybe in a wooded area or layby, you could be shooting something else  thats how they roll over there for a certain "Je ne sais quoi" if ya know what i mean Edited January 18, 2012 by mrwabbits
ozzy518
I used to have a SWB transit and I kept a quad in the back. Whilst the quad was fun, it was a pain driving to where I wanted to shoot because invariably the van would get bogged down or I would have nowhere to park it...Eventually I decided the experiment had failed and got a Defender. fenboy
I use my Astravan and a escort van before that simply as i cannot justify the running costs of a 4x4 I have leart to accept the fact that I will be walking to my chosen spot at times as the vans will not go everywhere a 4x4 will
gixer1
I always thought a Suzuki Carryvan/Daihatsu Hijet/Bedford Rascal would make a great shooting vehicle if they came in 4 wheel drive! Gixer
tomhw100
hi chaps i used to have a freelander 1.8 petrol (shame on me) she was surprisingly good of road though only got stuck in a ditch once! anyway i now have a citroen berlingo 1.9 diesel and its obviously ok for driving round on hard ground and it has pretty good clearance, tried it on wettish tracks and grass and its ok,i definitely wouldn't take it anywhere deep or proper wet though id be asking for trouble. My mates dad was a gamekeeper on a shoot and for years he used to have an old escort van with BF goodrich all terrains on it i think, and it went any where! although nw he has a discovery.... i definitely think tyres are a big big part of it though. luvbus
I've got a Renault Trafic that I take shooting, handy for keeping out prying eyes and great for carting round loads of kit. There are not many spots where I have to take the Disco cos then van cannot get there, you just take a little more care

Shooting Stephen
How about a Kangoo 4x4 - they turn up, from water authorities. ex police and some private? The ex-police car place in Brieley Hill (West Mids) has one. and they have sliding rear side doors. also I had a 2 wheel drive and made an internal roof rack (tallish van) keeps stuff (guns) out of the way. Rosebank22
The idea of a shooting van sounds very appealing to me. Have dreamed of a Defender for years but dont think I will be able to afford one looking at some of the comments throughout the motoring section. Does anyone try shooting from the back of a van with a shotgun? Rosebank
scolopax
Alot of wildfowlers who do serious miles for their sport use little white vans. Running up to Scotland or down into East Anglia really adds up in fuel costs over a season or two.
TJ91
my ford focus CAR does the job fine, it goes anywhere a van will go and has plenty of room in it for all my pigeon gear. good enough MPG for travelling aswell i would much rather have a car and leave it empty so people can look in and see thers nothing in there, vans they cant see whats in the rear and are more likely to break in for a look! I dont use my van (Pegueot Partner) for shooting as I use my Defender but if someone wanted to look in the back of my van all they need to do is open their eyes and look through the glass, not that hard! sodylt1
I run around in a Vauxhall combo, bags - decoys and fowling gear stays in the back with a dog cage fixed to the floor and it doe's everything I want of it and the space for the gear / dogs in the back is great ......
