binman
so, following on from my disco 3 or defender thread. iv decided to go for the defender, my buget is 8k max but would rather 7k to leave a few quid for any changes i may want to make to it, so what sort of reg and millage can i expect for that, and what engine is best to go for, i would like a county station wagon model. cheers, Steve

al4x
thats going to be somewhat away from the dream with regard to the budget
86inch
For £7K, you might pick up a half-decent TD5 County or maybe even XS station wagon. Or you might find a really nice 300TDI. You aren't in TDCI budget and whatever you go for, my advice would be to shop carefully and buy on condition, more than engine type. If you want a Station Wagon, i'd also advise only to buy a genuine factory station wagon and not a converted hard top. It will hold its value better and likely have a much better interior finish, and almost certainly worked less hard than a converted hard-top. Good luck with the search! Daveo26
You could get anything from an "F" 1988 reg to a 53 plate for that money, I personally think you get more car for your money if you buy a disco but then again its not a defender Id be looking at nice late model 300tdi defender. Or you could get an ex army hard top with a 2.5Na for about £3k and get a 300 put in it, get it painted, new wheels. That was my plan anyway. countryman
Hi Ive had various landrovers over the years. The last one a TD5 90 01 reg. I can tell you that they are not worth the money or loyalty people have for them. The build quality is at best poor, chasis rust, bulk head rust, water leaks when it rains, doors that wont shut in the winter and a non existent heater just to name a few things. You will be told how they keep going and how many old ones are still on the road thats because people have spent thousands on them over the years. Any vehicle that has had this much money spent on them would last the same. Believe me i know because i was one of those people. You will probably end up with one if your looking most people do. Be very careful with passenger seats in the back they will be side facing. These are lethal in any kind of accident as the passengers are flung sideways and the interior is very non forgiving. When you look at a landrover watch out where it has come from the further north it is the more snow it will have seen. Which means more grit on the road, a rust eater for landrover chasis. Sorry to be so negative but this has come from years of owning them. I was looking at a much newer one but then they had engine problems and for me enough was enough. sja90
Hi, I have had a late defender 90 TD5 (2006) for a couple of years now and it has been great, put 30K miles on it (now @ 60k). I think you need to factor in looking after them well, service regularly and get it professionally wax oiled if you can as they do suffer from corrosion, however I can quite honestly say its the best vehicle I have had. As has been suggested do make sure you look at plenty and hold out for the right one, preferably one previously owned by an enthusiast. In terms of steering away from station wagons with retro fitted windows / seats, I wouldn't rule them out; for vehicles 2005 / 06 onwards road tax prices got hiked right up, but this did not apply to commercial vehicles i.e. vehicles not sold from new as station wagons. Dealers at the time were taking non station wagons and upgrading them themselves to Station Wagon spec (rear seats, rear windows etc) with all the genuine bits, but meaning that the owners incurred the lower road tax and could also benefit from things like rubber matting throughout, which some find far more practical that the carpet type flooring Anyways good luck on the search, will keep an eye out for you on any for sale, Simon

mick miller
I paid 7k for an unmolested 300Tdi CSW 90, with 105,000 on the clock and fsh. They are out there but beware of lemons. A good tip for the chassis is to clean it up and spray with TetraSchutz, It'll keep the moisture and rust at bay. But they all leak.
njc110381
Just out of interest, why do you want the CSW? If you go for a hard top they're taxed as commercial rather than domestic 4x4. Domestic 4x4 is expensive in comparison so unless you need the back seats...
