The following item from the Daily Telegraph:-

Animal activists torment parents of rabbit flu man

By Amy Iggulden

(Filed: 24/08/2006)

Animal rights extremists have targeted the parents of Britain's first known human victim of "rabbit flu", with telephone callers telling them his death was a "rabbit's revenge".

Joan and Peter Freeman were called within days of the funeral of their son John, who died after handling an infected rabbit he had shot on the family farm.

They had appealed for greater awareness of the bacterium that caused his death. Pasteurella multocida is present in cats and dogs as well as the sinuses of rabbits.

But on the day they spoke out, anti-hunting extremists telephoned the family's 800-acre farm near Stowmarket, Suffolk, to tell Mrs Freeman that the couple's only child had been "popping off rabbits for fun".

In a separate call, Mr Freeman was told that the death might be "rabbit's revenge".

The couple went to a relative's house to escape the ringing telephone. Mrs Freeman said: "They were implying that my son deserved to die. I just can't understand how people can be so callous. To ring someone up who is devastated with grief - it is disgusting."

The calls came days after a group of anglers were attacked in Lancashire by a gang of masked animal rights activists, prompting fears that extremists want to widen the scope of their campaign of intimidation.

A woman was punched in the face and several cars were vandalised at Bank House fly fishery, at Caton, near Lancaster, when a group of people, including families, were attacked by saboteurs who had earlier failed to disrupt a grouse shoot.

Countryside campaigners said the targeting of bereaved parents suggested that the threat from militants could be worsening. Liz Mort, the eastern regional director of the Countryside Alliance, said: "It is truly dreadful. A hard core of people are prepared to stoop to what amounts to rural terrorism."

In May, four animal rights extremists were jailed after a six-year campaign of terror against the owners of a guinea pig breeding farm at Newchurch, Staffs, that culminated in the theft from a grave of the remains of Gladys Hammond, the mother-in-law of the farm's co-owner.

Last August, Debra Rowe, whose son Byron Evans, 13, was accidentally shot dead by his stepfather while out shooting foxes near Haberton, Devon, also received hate mail.

John Freeman's parents said their son had been a conservationist. Mrs Freeman said: "I can't believe these people are caring, or nature lovers or conservationists themselves. If they were, they would know that rabbit culling is a part of country life."

John, 29, a 6ft 5in former public school rugby player, was a shooting and fishing enthusiast who studied land management at Harper Adams University in Shropshire. He is believed to have been infected through a blister on his thumb while out on a rabbit cull on August 1.

The following day, he fell ill with a fever, which doctors thought was flu. But he later collapsed and was taken to hospital, where he died of septicaemia - apparently caused by a virulent form of Pasteurella multocida - three days later.

Doctors initially suspected he had died of E.coli, but a post mortem examination revealed that he was infected with the bacterium that causes pasteurellosis, which is known as "rabbit flu" or snuffles, even though it is not a virus. Mr Freeman said: "We are just ordinary country people who want to live our lives quietly.

The only reason we have accepted publicity is so that others can be aware that this disease exists. "We expect [opposition] from people who are anti-hunting. They have their views and we have ours. But this is sick. We have got more than enough to contend with, losing John."

He was the first person known to have died in Britain after catching the germ from a rabbit, although health officials have recorded rare previous cases of people dying after catching it from cats. The bacterium is typically passed to several hundred humans a year through bites, but the illness can usually be treated successfully with antibiotics if diagnosed. The League Against Cruel Sports described the telephone calls as "completely unacceptable".

It really is disgusting, I just can't figure out the mentality of these people. Two wrongs don't make a right. I watched that program on the Guinea Pig farm the other night again. To go as far as to desicrate a grave is beyond belief. Stonger laws should be introduced to stop this sought of behaviour.

Why are we all suprised at such repulsive behaviour?

This wretched government has singularly failed to curtail the activities of these animal rights fantasists. By tugging their forelocks and bowing down to the pressure exerted by these cockroaches (apologies for giving cockroaches a bad name) in the passing of the ill conceived Hunting Act, Labour has only encouraged such behaviour.

Robbing graves, mocking the dead and beating up female anglers.

Well done Blair, and the rest of his spineless party.

Exactly what I was thinking Baldrick. These terrorists have no regard for human lives or feelings. Animals lives (even vermin which landholders are legally obliged to control) are held above human lives to these people.

The only thing we can do is publicise vile acts such as these - the general (non-shooting) public are as disgusted as we are.

I agree with your sentiment, about fisherman who took the ostrich pose when the hunt ban was in full debate!

but as my old Dad would say, 2 wrongs dont make a right and we should rise above, I would welcome the national fishing thingy society to get in contact with the Countryside alliance, BASC, GCT etc.

On a Lighter Note Please do not read on if your easily offended: has anyone noticed the "popular culture" Irony of the Rabbit flew case........Goldie Looking Chain song Guns Don't kill people Rappers do,

Should now read "Guns don't kill people Rabbits do" I'm sorry not nice, I will get back in my box.

What a bunch of ********. They really are the scum of the earth. And i hope that they will be happy when the country is overrun with vermin.

As for fishing, i do like my fishing but fishermen are next on the list for antis as its so easy to disrupt. But they didnt help us try and save hunting so cant say they dont deserve it.

My mums sister is an anti (heh, my auntie is an anti). When I was a kid every time someone left the room and it was me and her, from as early as I remember, she would tell me my parents murdered animals and I if I kept doing so bad things would happen to me.

I remember once she was left to babysit me and she put on some animal rights video showing slaughter and stuff, telling me it was my fault that it was happening because I ate meat.

She ran sanctuaries and stuff, yet refused traditional treatments for the animals prefering homeopathic cures (which by and large are a load of **** for animals). Strange, she'd save things from the nackers yard then not pay for traditional vets preferring to let them suffer and die because of what she belived.

She was always attending some march or other, protesting about this and that. Vegan, wouldn't have any animal related thing.

Nasty bit of work she was, horribly bitter towards other humans but all the time in the world for some dumb animal.

I think she is probably fairly typical of your average anti, she would go to the ends of the earth in support of some cause for some defenceless animal but wouldn't visit my dying gran in hospital. Showed up and contested the will though. She did hold animals lives more sacred than humans, even family.

I have not spoken to her for over 10 years and never will again for what she did to to her mum.

They should be hung by their toes from a tree by fishing line and have the guts of rabbits thrown at them.

But seriously I find them sickening and it isn't so strange when you think about it. They think they are big and hard behind a telephone harrassing grieving parents, and also feel big beating up children and women anglers not to mention digging up peoples graves. But they wouldn't dare try anything like that near anyone strong enough to deal some of their own animal friendly medicine back out to the toe rags as you know what would happen... The same that happens when hounds are sprayed with pepper spray or when young people are pulled from the saddle.

OOPS :yp: It's happened again I've started ranting. I'm going to go and calm down by anti bashing on another place in the world wide web. :yp: :yp:

kill them, simple answer to a simple problem.

these wastes of oxygen will not rest until they are six feet under, then dig them up and hold their verminous bones to ransom.then target their families, places of work etc

hound them to an early grave, destroy their lives and social fabric, intimidate, threaten and harrass them.all with impunity from the law as no matter how much evidence they give it will be ignored.

oops,silly me

its only when these scum attack law abiding citizens that the above is acceptable.

thank god i got some tonight, imagine how the above would read if id been knocked back

these b######s disgust me  , the worst thing is that they will only ever target people that they believe can't fight back so it's highly unlikely that they'll ever get a taste of their own medicine  , they're nothing but a bunch of cowardly, gutless terrorists and as such 9mm would be the ideal solution to the problem :yp: .

sorry i thought we had a swear filter :yp:

i am a fisherman and i did actively protest against the hunting ban so do not tar us all with the same brush. As for the antis if they come near me when i am fishing i don't think i can be responsible for my actions. One thing the israelis have got right is eye for an eye etc ............ :good:

STICK YOUR DOUBLE STANDARDS UP YOUR ----!!!

YOU WOMBLE!! :good::yes:

I think most antis probably start off well meaning, genuinely wanting to make a difference. The problem is not all humans can control how far they go when they get involved in something. Some get obsessed and loose sight of the thing they set out to do, but can't see it themselves.

When you try and point this out you get hostility and abuse. The problem you have is when something like this is so ingrained into a person it takes over them and they become dangerously dedicated to the "cause". From then on it is an easy road for them to start doing things like attacking anglers and harassing people running legitimate hunts and other businesses.

It is a form of mental illness, I am with you there Darebear.
