Wildfowler
I finished off the breach plug this evening. It needs a polish but the face that meets the cartridge needs turning tomorrow to ill do it all in one sitting. The hole in the end is drilled through one diameter, counter drilled almost through another diameter, reamed then drilled and tapped M10 to take a grub screw for retaining the firing pin. I then moved on to a test piece to check that the female thread will work ok... This is almost complete It turned out successful so i can go to bed a happy man and looking forward to the weekend when i can get of with the barrel! Make sure you have good light on the subject and your phone should auto focus down to about 4" in distance from your subject!

TIGHTCHOKE
WF How will the breech plug be fitted and removed? Does it have cuts to allow a wrench to fit in to slots?
Wildfowler
Wildfowler! For close up's of your work via camera! Make sure you have good light on the subject and your phone should auto focus down to about 4" in distance from your subject! That's the main problem, good light. Although there is a big window the majority of the light is not natural as i'm normally working on it in the evenings or at night so the light is coming from a point source which means it reflects off the shiny steel and flares the lens making it almost impossible to get my iphone to focus on it at all, even if i tap where i want it to. I'm not keen on having my proper camera out there whilst i work as my hands are pretty greasy most of the time ... Hopefully these ones are better as it was daylight whilst working
Wildfowler
WF How will the breech plug be fitted and removed? Does it have cuts to allow a wrench to fit in to slots? yes, its not finished yet. the smooth part that i used to screw it in will have 2 flats so it can be removed with a spanner of some sort. I think the animation of the 3d model might show these.. Not sure i cant remember!
Nuke
I'm in awe of your skills and your commitment to finish it your own way. When you are all done could you please make a new thread were you post pictures of the finished boat and gun? I fear that the praise will add a considerable number of posts to the current one when you are done and the photos will be hard to locate. /Markus
Wildfowler
I had an entire day to myself so set about the barrel As i didn't want the lathe to take up more space than necessary, I put it at the end of the workshop but to get the full length into the lathe i had to make a small hole in the wall! This is the steady in being put to use This is the other end... The wall also helps act as a steady.

Wildfowler
After facing off the end i made a plug so i could put the centre in the end
Wildfowler
Considering how i had to support the tube, the surface finish came out quite well
Wildfowler
Due to the length i had to turn a section, pull it the barrel out, support it with the fixed steady and turn the next section. This is the second section.
Wildfowler
Just a quick video to show the depth of cut, feed rate and how hot things were getting. I had to take a panoramic pic to fit it all in This is the third section This is the first tapered section
Wildfowler
And this is how it ended. It took all day to turn just the outside diameter but it was time well spent. I'm pleased with how it came out as to be honest i wasn't much looking forward to turning it due to likelihood of vibrations, etc. Tomorrow i'll turn it around and turn the diameter to go inside the barrel sleeve. RichardH
How long is the finished barrel going to be? Seriously impressive project
Andy H
That's quite a good finish seeing the length turned unsupported. Edited June 30, 2013 by Andy H
lister1
I've jus5 realised I used to work on a lathe just the same as yours. I remember it had a bit of play in the saddle. Anyway. Keel up the good work.
Wildfowler
How long is the finished barrel going to be? Seriously impressive project It will be between 9 and 10' depending on balance point. The 3d model shows me the balance point so the tapers down the barrel have been set to give enough material around the breach, get it to sit with enough gun inside the boat and still be able to manoeuvre it using the gun crutch positioned at the start of the foredeck. I've turned the full 10' so I can cut a piece off the end to get it just right in terms of balance and length...
Wildfowler
That's quite a good finish seeing the length turned unsupported.Yeah, it's ok... If I use slower feed rates to get an even better finish it was vibrating. And unfortunately, it will all be painted anyway so the surface finish has only got to be good enough to inturn give the paint surface a good finish, so not too bumpy, similarly, its not great to have a mirror finish as the paint won't have a key to stick to... TIGHTCHOKE
I'm sitting in front of the computer with chicken, salad and new potatoes (Star Wars on TV) and I've just read the post where the barrel is through the wall! Now cleaning dinner from the keyboard
