markm
Are they worth getting for the wood burning stove? The room it's in is well hot, just to move some of the heat through the house a bit more.
Diceman
MIL has one. Total waste of money, you will move more heat around by coughing every ten minutes or so.
aga man
a friend of mine has one sat on top of his woodburner. it certainly heats up the room that it's in approx 20 square meters. not sure about it heating elsewhere as his layout is obviously different. they deffinately do work though. stokie
I've got one on my boat . They work a treat . They are expensive to buy but are free to run . They move enough air in a small space such as ours but don't think they will heat a whole house if that's what you mean In my opinion they are worth the brass
spanj
a noticeable difference when I got mine
njc110381
Same here, ours made a real difference in getting some of the heat out into other rooms. When it's running flat out you can feel the air bowing past your hand from a couple of feet away.

Dougy
I tie the cat to the top of mine, it seems to work ok well it moves the air about, not sure about how long it will last though. Not too long now the winters coming i bet.. I looked at those fans last week but cant make my mind up, £70-90 ???
crosshair
They do work, I know quite a few people that use them, and worth the money.

sandspider
I would've thought it would be perfectly possible to make one yourself for a lot less than they cost. (Might not look so swish, but...) It's just a thermocouple, presumably? E.g. I was told one wouldn't be that useful in my house as the draft from my front door blows into the living room (where the stove is), and moves more air (in the wrong direction) than an Ecofan probably would. Somone suggested trying a small desktop type powered fan near the stove, on a low setting - if that moves enough hot air around, an Ecofan probably will too. Or, some sort of Sterling engine? beeredup
we have got ceiling fans in our through lounge and they move the heat around very well on the lowest setting (i know its using electricity) so i have often thought about buying one of these stove top fans
.philmypower.
I have one and it certainly circulates the heat

Try Saxon at Chirk, they do reconditioned (& guaranteed) ones for about £90 IIRC
sandspider
Anyone more mechanically competent than me want to try making one...?
ferguson_tom
What about one of these little beauties instead with a fan attached?
working dog
Anyone more mechanically competent than me want to try making one...? Watched the youtube link earlier and I now have all the bits on order to make one. Will let you know how it turns out
sandspider
Nice one. I'd be interested to know how you get on, and how well it works. Did e-mail the bloke on Youtube asking about the full list of parts, but never heard back... Cost for parts should be around £40 I understand, so less than half the cost of an Ecofan? Cheers. al4x
on the other hand buying the parts not managing to make it work and buying an eco fan costs £40 more
sandspider
Yes, very true. That's why I'll be interested to see how (if) it works for Working Dog...
