PaulieWalnuts
Woohoo! Got me my first permission today. Having asked one of the local farmers at the beginning of the year and being aggressively knocked back, was pretty disheartened and didnt ask anyone else until today. Was driving by a local field which has just been drilled for wheat and ive never seen so many pigeons! Came home google mapped the area then did a search for local farms, found the most likely farm from the list, went and paid the guy a visit today and explained that i had seen so many birds on there today and said i would love to help him try to move them on, told him i was full insured etc and he gave me the go ahead to have a crack this weekend. Awesome! Just goes to show not to be too disheartened even if any knock backs you get are pretty nasty! In this instance the benefit of getting someone on to the land was pretty obvious to the farmer and the guy that usually shoots it doesnt turn up that much, so i think all this obviously helped. So, shooting over drilled wheat, should I use fibre wads and can you think of any reason not to use lead shot? Cheers
bullet1747
Well done mate keep at them My permissions don't mind plastic ,best ask the farmer wot he wants you to use ,don't up set him now
fenboy
No reason not to use lead as said ask the farmer about wads though most dont mind plastic if its not on grazing land. Dont get your hopes up for a big bag as the pigeons are quite likely to have cleared the field by the weekend and gone elsewhere to dine. sitsinhedges
I would give some thought to where you're going to set up beforehand so you're straight in on saturday. Find out which direction the birds are coming from and where they prefer on the field My two priorities are usually to try and have the wind at my back or side so the birds are landing towards me rather than coming from behind, then I try and get set up so the sun isn't going to blind me if it comes out. The prevailing wind is generally westerley around here though more southerly right now, and the sun goes from east thru south to west as the day progresses. Bright sunshine can make shooting impossible. Don't bother the farmer, just use fibre if you're unsure and take all you bring home with you. Drillings are easy to walk to pick up plastic wads if you need to. Good luck let us know how you get on.
sitsinhedges
I would add that Google Earth is very useful for planning a shooting session. Gives a very good perspective on the land in the area you are going to be.

yickdaz
well done on gaining the land and you never know it could snowball from there, the farmer may know another farmer who is after someone to shoot on his land it happens. i mainly use fibre wads now because we shoot on land used for cattle i can use plastic on loads more land but just buy fibre so i aint buying 2 lots of shells all the time, can,t see using lead shot a problem, unless there is a flight pond on the land and you have a pop at the ducks one night good luck hope you make a bag

Hope not for your sake. It would be good if you could get a few.
Topgunners
Nice one. I can feel your excitement from your post. I had 12 + knock-backs when i first started calling and now have many thousands of acres. Always do a reccy before hand and sit and watch the fields for a while looking for flight lines. footpaths, safe shot directions etc, before wading straight in. What you also might try is ask your farmer whose land butts up to his boundaries and then go approach those farmers explaining that you shoot for mr x and would they let you do the same for them.. You would be surprised on how your shooting permissions might snowball. Good luck on the shooting. Dave K
hawkeye
What is also worth a try is ask your farmer whose land butts up to his boundaries and then go approach those farmers explaining that you shoot for there neighbour and if any shot birds fall on his land would he give you permission to collect any shot birds.. B725
well done on gaining your shooting,I would stick to fibre wads as plaswads look a mess on bare earth unless you want to pick them up you wont notice any difference by shooting them.
