Watch those barrels in the snow!

I averted a potential disaster today!

I was beating on our local walk and stand shoot today when I noticed snow on the end of the barrels of a walking gun next to me.

I called over to him to break the gun & check his barrels, I watched as he remove the carts and blew 2 icey wads out the end of his gun, while he was doing this a lovely cock bird sailed over him. Hows that for timing!

I didn't even get a thank you

Watch those barrels with all this white stuff about guys!

its a good idea to put a bit of tape over the ends of the barrels.it will easily blow of when you fire.

:hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm: WHAT!!!  Putting tape over the end of your barrels is no where near a good idea! It can have a similar effect to having snow or mud in the end of your barrels, it doesn't let the pressure in front of the shot to be released so it ends very badly. Not to mention you have to carry tape round with you and redo it every time you shoot so I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND THIS!

that takes the prize as the most stupid idea ever, or your pulling our leg

Tape over the end of the barrel is a common trick used by deer stalkers on their rifles to prevent any **** getting in to the barrel. The tape blows off well before the bullet leaves the barrel. I'm not sure if you can apply this to shotguns though.

The column of air being compressed by the shot and wad as it travels up the barrel will blow the tape off a long time before the shot arrives at the muzzle.. Electricians tape is a good choice, just one piece over the end (only just going over one side so you end up with more of a flap than anything else) .. I do this always in winter with rifle, or use condom I weather really bad but have never seen the need with shotgun, I can't remember the last time I crawled through the **** with my shotgun! Lol

Tape is a good idea, it will blow off long before the shot column gets there.

As for what happens when the muzzle is blocked by snow, well if you can blow down the barrel and clear it, nothing.

The air the shot going up the barrel displaces it would blow it clear, ICE or HARD packed snow is another thing altogether!!!

I have another danger to announce. You know those little 7Ah batteries for a flapper? Well, it's JUST posible for the brass end of a cartridge to short the terminals out and THAT SETS IT OFF!!.

I know 'cos it happened to me when driving home in my truck. I just emptied the catridges from my pocket into a box which had a battery in it. 20 mins later, 70mph in the middle lane of a 3-lane road - Flash, Bang, Wallop- lead rattled around inside the cab!!!

Scared the life out of me but no harm done as the shot was not constrained after it left the hull. Now, if it had been in a pocket??????

Take care!
