‘Naïve newby…’

I’m looking to buy my first pump-gun! I’m a bit of a pauper so I want a cheap gun. My reading of ‘Pump-Club’ suggests that the advice is:

"Buy a Remington 870. Or else a Mossberg 500. Unless of course you can find an Ithaca 37. Which you won’t. Unless, unless, of course you have a lot of pennies, in which case ignore all of that and buy a Benelli."

…have I got that about right?

My questions/worries are:

- I want a cheap gun, ideally £200-£300. For this price-range the Remingtons / Mossbergs that I have seen are all around 15 years old with 10,000s of rounds through them and fading bluing, scratches, rattles, etc.

- The Remingtons / Mossbergs also seem to be mostly long-barrelled (around 28”). I’m after a short-barrelled gun, ideally 24”.

- All of this suggests a Hatsan, a Revo, or for a little more a Winchester SXP. This way I get one fresh out of the box in my spec. and with a warranty. I basically get the brand-new Mondeo rather then a 15-year-old 3-series?! Seems sensible. Happy days.

- But there does not seem to be much enthusiasm for any of these guns on this thread. I am surprised, as I thought that the whole point of a pump-gun is that you are not buying a Purdy, Beretta, etc, label for mega money? I cannot find any good description of what is actually wrong with them however, so why the hatred for non-Italian/American made guns? It must be something else, please explain.

- Compounding all of this is that I don’t really like the way that the Escort, SXP, or other ‘Benelli-style’ guns look. To me they all look like semi-autos and whilst I know it is silly to go on style, I do like a pump-gun that looks like a pump-gun.

- There seem to be other second-hand weapons about that might fit the bill (ie. in better nick with 24” barrels), such as those by Fuzil, Manufrance, Stevens, Squires-Bingham, and Magtech, etc. I’m guessing though that these are not popular because they are out of production and you can’t get easily get spares or modern composite stocks and add-ons for them?

- I also like the idea of the ‘Celect’ adjustable chokes I have seen on some older guns. Modern weapons do not seem to have them though. Why is this, are they rubbish?

See how conflicted and confused I am?!! Please help!

I dont rate Hatsans semis, but the pumps seem OK. I have not known anyone who has one not to rate theirs quite highly.

Never seen a Revo to comment. The SXP has a bizarre short stock and also operates partly by recoil to take the slide back - seems like something to go wrong to me, I like pumps that are simple, it is part of their charm. I have not shot an SXP though I have mounted one.

The C-lect choke has been superceded by screw in multi-chokes.

As for the other guns available, they are all fun to shoot, cheap and cheeful and will probably do OK. The CBC pump is an 870 copy made by CBC, who make the cheaper Remingtons for Remington anyway (if that makes sense). I do not know if you can interchange spares though.

Manufrance make a good gun (or commission one anyway) but spares may be a problem.

Stevens are a bargain basement pump. Some swear by them, some at them. Seems like anything cheap you depend on the tolerances going the right way perhaps?

I think most like the Mossy or the 870 as they are cheap, plentiful, loads of add-ons, they seem to fit most people OK and spares are peanuts compared to other some guns. They will also remain in production for years so they are a good investment.

I have an 870 in 20b and a 500 in 12b. I rate both very highly. You can get a a really nice 500 or 870 within your budget if you are patient. If you cannot wait, have a look through the US forums for common faults on the rest of the pumps and buy one with the info of what problems to watch out for. Sporting Gun has an 870 Wingmaster for £350 at the mo.

It is harder to go wrong buying a pump than most shotguns though.

The Hatsan, 870 and 500 are failrly easy for a decent gunsmith to convert to section 1.

Not sure how an RFD would go about converting an 870 from S.2 to S.1....as the main magazine tube is not listed as a spare part, it is a "return to factory for re-fit" item

OTHER pumps, yes...you can unscrew or otherwise remove the magazine tubes with some effort/special tools & some pumps such as the Hatsan have S.1 main tubes listed as spare parts

Of course, one advantage of an S.2 (870 or otherwise) is in allowing new shooters to try the gun design before deciding which S.1 they want to go with

Thanks, I stand corrected. A pal had an 1100 (same tube as the 870) converted from restricted to sec 1 for next to nothing a couple of years ago. I will ask how he had it carried out. Could it have had the crimp reamed out?

Possibly...I'd be interested to know what was done to make the 1100 into a S.1

The S.2 crimp is a PITA as a couple of my S.2 have the awfull factory followers installed and I'd love to be able to replace them with better designs, but they are in there for the duration....

I had my wingmaster changed to S.2 but i machined up an alli. follower before it was crimped.

My understanding is some magazines are locktited in and can be removed with some care. The 870s are silver soldered in, the crimp can be removed by heating up the mag tube and driving in a tapered wedge.

I have a 24" barrelled mossberg and love it but I could be talked in to letting it go as it is on my shotgun cert (sec 2) and I'm in the process of applying for my FAC and buying a used sec 1 gun and selling my sec 2 would be more cost effective than buying a new tube and paying for the smithing.

Hey Guys

I'm thinking I'd like a pistol grip stock for my mossy 500, apart from midway UK does anyone know of any others available in the UK? I've had a good look and found very little.

cheers

Steve

Have you seen this one at UkmcPro, it's from FAB Defense, and looks like an M4 type stock. Bit expensive, but there's 15% off FAB Defense stuff on this site at the minute.

Its a bit basic and not so great looking but I reckon with this, the matching forend and a heat shield she'll look ruggedly cool :)

I did the opposite last year, swapped an Ithaca 37DSPS for an old knife that my mate had on his stall... only did the trade as I'd just picked up a '59 dated Ithaca 37 earlier that day & the knife was one I'd had my eye on for about 5 years!!
