Semi-auto 12 bore shotgun? Must handle 28gr 65mm carts.

I want a 12 bore semi-auto shotgun that will be used exclusively for clays. It doesn't have to be a dedicated sporting gun - my clay shooting is strictly recreational, not competitive.

I need multichokes and the gun must handle 28 gram 2 1/2" cartridges reliably. So nothing chambered for 3 1/2" carts? And does that rule out inertia guns?

Last Sunday I had a few rounds (Eley First 28 gram) through a Browning Maxus and it handled them like a good 'un, so that's one option.

What else is out there that will meet my requirements? Beretta Outlander? Winchester SX3? Beretta A400? And...?

Obviously the cheaper the better (less on shotgun, more on cartridges...) but price is not the major issue - I'm willing to pay what's necessary for the right gun.

Many thanks for any input/advice.

Cheers,

Steve

I had the Benelli Raffeole Crio and that cycled 65 mm cartridges without any probs and they were the Hull Comp X 21G's.

For a few years I had a Benelli Centro. It never missed a beat. I was shooting game loads through it, mostly 32 gram steel. Had I ever shot clays with it I suspect that it would have worked with the loads I want to use.

But I'll never know because I sold it :sad1:

Any modern semi auto will cycle 28g carts no problem.

Try and handle a few and then make your choice.

Figgy

This was my first thought also - surely all this R&D they do is doing some good!?!?!?

My Mossy 930 cycles 21 gram reliably ( hull cartridge IIRC) - they come up second hand occasionally, and seem good value.... mine, new was just shy of £600 - the synthetic stock ones can be modified in all sorts of ways too - for fit, and for that tacticool type thing - if that it is you thing....

everyone has their favorite,i have a300 outlander that cycle anything i feed it,but havent used anything over 32grams yet no problems at all.

So you feed it stuff like Eley First? The Outlander is high on my shortlist, alongside the Maxus. And it has the advantage that it's considerably cheaper. And I've already got a stock of Mobil chokes.... :)

I'm pretty much back where I thought I'd be - it's either the Outlander or the Maxus. Lots of nice features on the Maxus, like speed load, fancy new fore-end catch, etc, etc. But is all that stuff necessary on a gun that's going to be used for clays only? The Outlander is hundreds of £s cheaper, and that's a lot of cartridges.

It sounds as though both will recycle 28 gram 65mm carts - for the most part. And that's important to me because I've got 1000+ Eley First carts in stock.

BTW anyone got the Weatherby SA-08? That gun's a dark horse. What's after sales service like?
