I was an investment banker for 9 years and left in 2007 and moved into Telecomms and then I made the move to Data Centres last year. Don't regret the moves at all but it takes a lot of time and energy with the steep learning curve when entering new industries and chasing where the best money is. I think because work was always there and money was not a thing to worry about you just get on with it now things have almost stopped i have come to realise how much I don't like it anymore, Henry, sadly I didn't take any exams at school..I knew better than what my parents where saying... boy how wrong was I, I just wanted to get out and work, and being honest, I have worked all my life my academic skills we never up to much, I am more of a practical person, you know the sort..chuck away the manual and fiddle with the buttons I am teaching my self filming, I couldn't tell you one setting from another , yet i can produce any effect i want and have been told i have a natural eye for a good picture, maybe this will see me through. In my opinion it's the building management firms and agencies who've messed everything up in the building trade, all subbies doing the bare minimum to help, no organization from the management, and pee poor pay from agencies who look to skim off the top of wages, then payroll companies, all in all a general lack of knowledge or understanding of how a buiding gets "built". four-wheel-drive Posted February 17, 2013 Report Share Posted February 17, 2013 When it comes down to it I think that most jobs are boring once you have been doing it for a bit think about being a doctor GP most of the time after spending what 8 years learning things then you have to sit and listen to peoples boring little problems over and over again ok you will get satisfaction at times when you make someone well again but most of the time it is take some of these pills and hope that they do not *** back or am I being to cynical. tweedledee Posted February 17, 2013 Report Share Posted February 17, 2013 i just changed jobs this week. i worked for my last boss for 13 years and me and him were great mates.it was the hardest thing i have done in my life leaving him,he was a gentleman to work for.sadly the work has been drying up and was rarely getting full weeks and with a house to keep its a constant struggle.... i went to the same line of work and can only hope i settle in.... i`m still applying for other jobs with better prospects and pay but so long as i can keep money coming in each week `m happy... I never had anything much from school, certainly not enough to get into uni, however when I applied they told me my experience in the field and my life experiences were enough if I did a distance course first. This just showed them that I could string a few sentences together in the form of an essay, the rest is history. You are, as you say, never too old... gemini52 Posted February 17, 2013 Report Share Posted February 17, 2013 I am a decorator,been doing it for forty five years this year,tried to get out many times but end up coming back to it,its gave me a living,some good times and some not so good,i prefer to do private work if i can its less hassle,you dont have agencys taking there cut and making you wait for money,and builders thinking you will work for peanuts and expect you to be gratefull to them,people seem to forget that we all have bills to pay. I can run it, at 1st, along side my flooring business, at least that way i will still have a few pennies coming in.... I need to build a website.. Business cards are not a problem, I have come up with a good catchy name ...who would you recommend to build a website I have looked at this particular market and know i can equal, or even better than what i have found.... What you seem to be lacking is confidence. If your wife is right behind you discuss everything with her and eventually some sort of opportunity will present itself. There are very few people nowadays who have worked in the same job for the whole of their working lives. This was never the case even one generation ago. Older apprentices or '5 day course' tradesmen tend not be taken seriously im my experience. With bigger companys going bust, everybody sets up self employed and ends up pricing for the same work. Iv been a bricklayer for 11 years, im not making great money at the minute but we have plenty of work on. My advice would be to tough it out if your current job is paying the bills.
