optomist
Hi Folks have been trying to shoot /entice crows on various bits of land including my own where they regularly steal eggs from our chicken sheds, but not had much success. Trying with a couple of flocked decoys and a black bag of rubbish spread out, they fly around but don't usually land. tried in grass fields, 100 acre arable fields just drilled, woodland edges all without much success. hiding in hedge with .223/17 fireball 200 yds away and coverd in cammo gear so hopefully i'm well hidden. not sure where to go next but i draw the line at dressing up in blackfeathers flapping round a rubbish bag. All advice gratefully received. Thanks optomist
JDog
I am afraid that there is no alternative to applying the black feathers. Please post the resultant pictures.
simjakcal
you may be better getting them into range and shooting them with a shotgun,,trying to get them to land to shoot with a rifle could be a long wait ! very wary birds they be ! evo
keeping ultra still is the key, their eyesight is unreal, stay hidden and shoot with a shotgun over decoys
matone
More chance of them landing to investigate the rubbish without decoys there if you `re using the rifle. As others have said it`s get closer with a shotgun otherwise. steve_b_wales
As mentioned. A shotgun is the best way to get them. Buy yourself a Primos Power Crow caller, and learn to use it. Once mastered, it's deadly in bringing the Crows/Jackdaw's in. You could also buy yourself a motorised flapper, and attach a dead Crow/Jackdaw to it. Most Crows, especially young ones, go mad when they see it flapping, as it resembles an injured bird on the ground. I use all of the above with great success, together with a load of decoys and floaters. Steve.
optomist
Thanks folks looks like time to park the rifle then but saved from those irritating feathers. a primos power crow caller? presume this is mouth operated one similar to my fox squeeker? and what are floaters in a decoy context? optomist

Floaters, or bouncers, are telescopic fibreglass rods, that a dead bird can be fixed to. When there's a breeze, the birds float/bounce and give the impression of a bird coming into the decoys/birds on the ground.

karpman
Just to add to proceedings. Get set up and be ready for um before first light. That first hour really can be golden or black in this case. A flapper works well sometimes too. Karpman

Karpman +1 morning time is by far the best time to go at them! iv had mornings where iv bagged 30+ in an hour! they are not as aware in the morning and tend to be over ruled by hunger! but all golden rules as mentioned still apply! try to pick a morning with abit of wind! this will help! i will also vouch for the primos caller! i would not go wuthout mine! I,ve not been able to find a primos power crow caller anywhere in the uk only the non power version. Is there any difference? Amazon .com have got one to ship over from the states but surely they must be available over here, anyone know where? Regards Optomist I use thin bamboo canes which are cut approx 15" long. I get the dead Crow and insert the cane through it's 'back end' right up into the beak or skull. The remainder of the cane is then stuck in the ground and the bird is then in an upright position. You can adjust the angle of the cane in the ground to alter the position of the bird. This method works everytime, and I keep a few dead ones with canes attached, in my freezer to use on my next time out. If the birds are still frozen or partly frozen, it does'nt matter, because you can put them straight out in the field.
