Other than Clays, what can I do?

I have been trying ot think of a way of asking this for a while as I feel a bit intimidated by this.. But clearly if I don't get to the point and ask outright I am not going to find out.

I was always curious about Shotguns, but it wasn't until my Girlfriends friend got a new boyfriend that I was introduced to shooting.. He was CID and was part of a syndicate, who used to shoot Pheasant and Duck on private land... Probably contacts they made during their time on the force.

I was invited out on 2 occasions. First I was given a lesson, wtih clays, just to understand how and was then loaned a gun, taken out to some land and given the opportunity to shoot some Pheasant.. Unfortunatly, I didn't hit a thing and if I am honest, didn't see much to shoot. I expected a flock, but all I saw was the odd bird flying over and was always too late..... In the evening we ended by a river and shot a few ducks. But again I came back with nothing. I think I shot about 3 cartridges all day :) The group let me take their quarry home and I filled the freezer.. And to be honest, I really liked the idea of shooting and eating what I caught..

After the 1st session, I got myself a SGC and a gun, and spent a few sessions shooting clays.. The next time out with him was more productive.. Saw more birds.. Managed to shoot them.. And again, the freezer was refilled, but this time by my own handy work.

I have to say I loved it.. He was too far away from me to make it regular.. But I was happy with a few shoots per year..

Unfortunatly, their relationship ended, and the next season although I was invited down, but it was awkward.. The next season, I was invited again, but it just didn't seem right.. I have now lost contact, and the chances of shooting has ended... So other than Clay, I have no scope to do anything else and I want more.....

How do I go about getting a shoot? What am I legally allowed to shoot with an SGC? I understand "seasons".. But how exactly do you go about getting a shoot? And what exactly (And where) can you shoot.

I am a bit confused about WHERE you can shoot.. I assume it always private land with permission.. But I have seen Youtube videos of people shooting targets (With Shotguns) on what appears to be Common Land and I assume that this is simply illegal...

Where do I go from here? Is it all about trying to make friend who have contact? Or are there clubs/groups I can join who welcome people like me...

I don't really care what I shoot.. I just want to shoot something other than Clays...

Can anyone give me any tips where to start? I know I could attend a driven shoot and pay a fortune.. But I want something less official and more like I am used too....

Hi Mate,

You It might be better if you posted this In another part of the site, One of the shooting pages would be best. More people will see it.

If you don't have a place to shoot at. You can buy a days shooting On one of the estates or shoots that are all up and down the country.

Do you buy any shooting Mag's/news papers ?

A lot advertise In there. I'm sure there will be one close to you. Also If you do clay shooting. ask about at the clay ground. There may be a shoot that they do, Or know of were you can go and have a day,

Apart from that. You can go knocking on farmers doors. Asking if they need any help, Controlling Rabbit's Pigeon's on there Land.

But you very well may get many, many Knock backs before you get any Luck.

Good luck mate,

Have a look in this bit you might get someone offering something where you live or can travel to. You could stick up a wanted ad under this section too. Also try a clay ground get talking to some of the people there they may be able to help. Am in a similar boat so to speak. Like above comment ask local farmers if they have pigeon or bird problems on the crops or rabbit that need controlling. Fingers crossed something comes up.

It all depends wot u want, depending where u are. There are loads of diy syndicates around me which start around £2-300 and go up depending on the ammount of birds u want to shoot and how deep ur wallet is. To buy a day's shooting is quite expensive (ie £25+ per bird shot, say 100 bird day= 2500/8guns= £300+vat+tip) i've been shooting most of my life and never treated myself to a day yet, always mean to but just cannot justify the money

Try guns on pegs or basc's go shooting? sites for syndicates which will probably be the best way in. Possibly a wildfowling club if ur near the coast?

Otherwise beating on a local estate would be a good way to start, meet local shooters and get in that crowd and they could point u in the right direction

Finally if u shoot at the same clay shoot regularly try brassnecking and asking around there, the likely folk to ask would probably be anyone who shoots with a SxS or is wearing more greeny/tweedy type shooting waistcoat.

See if you can find a pigeon shooting club around where you live. Put an advert on the board at your local clay ground. With this weather you'll find lots of pigeon shooters go there to get out of the rain. Shoot clays with different people at the clay ground and I am sure you'll eventually make contact or find out about the local pigeon clubs.

It's not easy getting permission on land as a lot of farmers are somewhat cagey about letting people onto their land with guns. When you think about it would you let a stranger into your back yard if you had thousands of pounds worth of machinery lying about. Keep trying and you will eventually get permission but don't expect to come to you. You have got to go out and knock on some doors.

I think you should do a lot more reading up and learn far more than you have so far. That way you may have some hope. Unless you are wealthy you cant walk straight into shooting, offer to help on some shoots local to you, but you may find a list of people who have beat you to that.

After reading your post I do think you should read and read and ask more questions. some of the things you put shocked me..ie flocks of game etc.

Is he not reading & asking now?!

Got to start by asking the simple questions - they're only simple when you know the answer :/

I disagree, you don't have to be wealthy, just lucky perhaps. As for flicks of game ( what is the correct collective noun for several game birds if not a flock?

Nows a good time to start looking around the farmland near you and check whether any of the crop is being nailed by pigeon/crow, when you find some talk to people in the area to find out who owns the land then approach the farmer offering to help sort the birds out and protect his crop, doing it this way I've never had a farmer say no.

My advice is to get beating as much as you can in your local area. join NOBS. You will meet people. They are not likely to just turn around an invite you to shoot first time they meet you but you will be mixing with the right sort of people and eventually opportunities will come up.

Its all about who you know.

As a youngster l use to shoot, then a break for more years than l care to remember .. been back shooting about 18 months, so a new comer in reality. Ive ask for advice on the forum as and when needed and been given it.

One point as l see myself a new comer that l would suggest ! .. is and l feel its more important than learning to shoot straight or gaining your first permission, and it quarry identification. Ive had an interest in ornithology for 40 years and thats a benefit l think is an absolute necessity, you clearly are able to identify quarry that you can legally shoot and more importantly NOT shoot.

A stroll this evening on the farm ... Teal, Snipe, Lesser white spotted woodpecker, moorhen, pheasant galore ... barrel was lifted for woodies, jay's, and magpies ...unsuccessfully l.may add ... its part of the big picture and conserves the sport and enhances wild life with the UK.

I shoot 3-4 times a week and reading the law and regulations ... everybody has the snap decision shoot or not ... 1% of doubt = don't shoot ... enjoy your shooting
