delburt0
I should also imagine that a lot of people who made contributions to get her flying would not wish to see a part of its limited flying life used up this way KW they could always use the poll tax money if theres any left not the best invention ever made, poll tax that is not the vulcan bomber Edited April 8, 2013 by delburt0

houlsby
I'm living on an old pit-top! I'd have noware to live! In all seriousness, my dad was a miner, my grandad was a miner, his dad was a miner.. If it wasn't for her, I'd be a miner. Instead I'm earning a bloody good wage doing something interesting. (Instrument tech) Its a shame she's not still in power, a shame we get these puppets who slither onto stage. And even more a shame she's gone. I'm 25, with a two year old son. There's going to be nothing left for him here when he's my age...
keg
Its only Northerners hate her, to everyone else she had the balls to kick the country into shape. It is the passing of a pretty great leader I'm a northerner with all my mum's side of the family being miners. I agree with you. Best post war PM we ever had. they could always use the poll tax money if theres any left not the best invention ever made, poll tax that is not the vulcan bomber But one of the fairest.... keg
I have cousins that live in the old pit villages outside Newcastle. They will be celebrating up there sure enough but none of them have lifted a finger to help themselves these past few decades since the strike. A whole community still consumed with hatred yet it was them that took her on in the first place, they forget that. Arthur Scargill wanted personal glory, he was prepared to sacrifice his members to achive his twisted communist ambitions and he lost. Absolutely right Vince. my uncle worked for him in the NUM. He was a typical socialist, worse type.

keg
I agree we should all be respectful of the dead, that said Personally I did not like or respect her as a person or a politician, the faulklands saved her floundering career, until ultimatly she was kicked out by her own party its easy to reminice especially with such weak PC politicians we have today, but lets not pretend she was better than her not so special achivments surgest. Yes she was strong but that was tainted by arogance & bad decission making, Hindsight is a very exact science. I am a huge supporter of hers but even I can see that certain things could have been done differently. That said, she made the decisions at the time based on what information she had. Remember that in 1979, we were a basket case. Those friendly unions had been bending the previous Labour govt over and giving it to them long and hard. The IMF would not lend us any more money, we were further down the sh***er than Greece is.
keg
thats what John of Gaunt thought, however it caused a peasants revolt and ended up costing him his head literally, as they say some never learn do they. KW Sadly KW the wets in her own party plus the press used it as a big stick. It was dead simple. A person in a house uses x services therefore 2 or 3 people = 2or 3 x X. Even the socialists can't argue with that logic..

delburt0
how was poll tax the fairest wanting to screw money out of the working class charging 5 people each the same amount of money even though you where on the minimum wage at 18 yrs old living with your parents living in one house aswell as you paying income tax from your wages, while the single home owner next door paid once oh it was very fair at the time the man next door to my mums bragged about earning 50k a yr and paying £350 poll tax while our income did not amount to 50k between the 5 of us and we paid 2.5k a yr "forgive me but how was that fair" Edited April 8, 2013 by delburt0
keg
defiantly opinionated As all of us are on here dear boy, it's one of the things that Dame Maggie fought for.. Free speech- as they say, I might not like your views but I will defend your right to have them to the hilt. Lively debate is good as long as we respect each other's opinion. Interestingly, no govt since of any persuasion has changed any of her laws..
Vince Green
The big problem with the poll tax was you could avoid it by not registering , which is what would have happened in droves. Eventually it would have led to a collapse in the electoral process.
Chr15j
The Lady turned the country around fanatically and gave Great Britain it " Great" back. Shame she got to see how things got undone. PS, the minimum wage did not exist at the time the Poll tax was around. Should you pay less at the supermarket if you earn less?. At the other end of the scale, why should my mother who was a pensioner, and who happened to live in a house that had increased in value over the years, pay more than five people who used five times the services. Blunderbuss
Its only Northerners hate her, to everyone else she had the balls to kick the country into shape. It is the passing of a pretty great leader Yeah and all southerners are shandy drinking bed wetters! Nothing like a bit of mindless stereotyping eh. I am northern born and bred and grew up in the Thatcher years and think she was our greatest peace time PM by a county mile. She had her faults but no other politician since has a fraction of her conviction, integrity and yes, balls. Britain before her was an insecure, dismal, post-colonial has been, in terminal decline and being ground into the dust by the unions. She gave Britain it's respect back. If all her privatisations, union reforms etc were such a bad thing, how come no Labour government since has reversed them? I shall make an effort to pay my respects at her funeral procession if possible. I t will be a long time (if ever) we see her like again.
