200yrd Carrion... my best shot to date

Hey Guys

Yesterday I was on one of my permissions looking for orrible Carrions that had been bothering the lambing sheep, I pull up in the truck to see a group of corvids on the ground doing corvid things, now many say Carrion wont feed with Rooks or Jackdaws but I thought I'd check out the group anyway.

Out comes my trusty CZ455 in 17HMR with a current scope zero of 100yrds, I wind the mag up to x16 and work my way through the group checking the id of each bird.... rook...rook... jackdaw... rook... jackdaw....jackdaw... wait a minute!

In a group of around 20 birds there he was.... a Carrion masquerading as a not so orrible rook/jackdaw.

I adjust the focus so its nice and crisp which gave me a range of around 200yrds, I check the wind and I've got a good 15mph gusting maybe 20mph cross wind... hmmm not ideal I think but if I get out of the truck or try and get closer they'll scarper.

I decide to take the shot, I get a good steady mount on my truck door frame and adjust for wind and extra range, I wait for the wind to steady, hold a breath and squeeze the trigger... The round zings through the air and strikes the Carrion square in the chest.

Job done :good:

I dont normally take or share photos of what I've shot but this one was a well calculated educated damn good shot (if I do say so myself) and I was pretty chuffed. :)

you're right I didnt know that, I generally give the rooks and jackdaws an easier time unless they're ruining crops or the like... Should I promote them to the shoot on sight list? Currently that list only has Carrions and Magpies on it. I'm a bit of a countryman and try to look after our song/garden birds as best I can by putting up bird boxes etc, I try to remove Carrion and magpie from these areas but didnt think Rook and Jackdaws had the same nest/chick robbing habbits?

Altho the same farmer who I was helping yesterday has asked me to clear out the rookery on his land, its huge, 100's of birds... thats going to be a big job!

Yes add rooks and jackdaws to your list but under no circumstances should you attempt to 'clear out' the rookery. It may be an old wives tale but the story goes that if a rookery is dessimated and all of the rooks leave then untold miseries attach themselves to the locals and their village. Shoot some 'branchers' in May but not the whole lot.
