Jim c
Was out on one of my permissions tonight when a bloke who lives in house just on the entrance to the land came up to me and started telling me I shouldn't be shooting here as the law states you can't use guns with in 2000 yds of any house and that I will end up in court if I'm not care full I politely agreed and carried on with what the land owner wants me to do. So has anyone else heard o this 2000 yard law ?

Jim c
Ha that must be why nice never heard it either. I just agreed as there's no point trying to tell people like that.
parapilot
Did you tell him it was also illegal to talk and distract a shooter holding a firearm in the right hand while out shooting?? timmytree
This bloke may be mixed up with one of the proposals from an anti shooting lobby that was reported some time ago, I'll try and find the report and post it, basically the proposal was to outlaw any form of shooting within 2 kilometres of an occupied dwelling. The proposal was chucked out but it's a good indication of what shooting sports are up against.

That would mean just about everywhere, except a few isolated places in Scotland
Kes
I quite frequently talk to our Wildlife crime officer and he suggests its a civil crime (trespass) to allow shot to fall on another persons property and we can estimate that this might occur at ranges of 200 metres in absolutely the right conditions. Equally, apart from opinion, how do you prove it and how do you claim damage as trespass is only a crime (civil), if damage to the property owner can be proved. You can shoot 1m away from a property if you are shooting away from it but common sense is the best guide together with a knowledge of who lives there ! al4x
You get these idiots all over, discuss it with your landowner is the main thing. If they know the person and are happy to upset them then crack on. Lots will and are happy to tell them to behave when they phone. Next step is to call in and let the police know you are shooting there for a while and you have all bases covered. One call to the police and any after that then they will get a talking to. We have iffy places and tend to go in by vehicle lights off shoot the area reasonably fast and get out, the more you do it the more they get used to it

al4x
You can't shoot 1 meter away from a property. you can, no law to stop you as long as it is land you have permission on. The only laws that affect where you can shoot are relating to roads.
southeastpete
if the person in the house minds, unless it is rented and the landlord has it in the contract, then it is 50m away. That is what i am sure of in my head. having said that, i am now going to go away and double check because you seem sure too lol

B725
The bloke is talking rubbish however if you are close to his house there may be the noise of the shots to be aware of.
Jim c
I had considered the noise but I only use a 22 rim fire and am not up there stupid hours. Even the land owner said he was weired.
Kes
I did say you can shoot 1M away from a house but would you ? Probably not. Being considerate shooters, we would all either call in and explain or try to stay as far away as is practical. Doesnt however alter the fact that you can. A 1km exclusion zone for shooting, a 2km exclusion zone for release pens if I remember correctly. http://www.commondecency.co.uk/home.html It is truly laughable. They say shooters "trample on" families when all they do is shoot on their own land. By calling for an exclusion zone, they are trampling on us. dadioles
Yet another wonderful thread where licensed gun owners have not got the faintest idea of how the law relates to them. Don't you think it would be a good idea to find out what your real legal responsibilities are. We all know that you cannot use anything less than .17hmr to shoot deer, rabbits cannot be shot on sundays, christmas day is the only day when you can shoot anything anywhere. It is illegal to shoot when facing north next to a public footpath unless the wind is in your face and of course an air rifle is not a real gun but a toy designed to cause pain to wildlife at more than 100 yards..... And I have a 16" penis. Unfortunately I have not seen it for years because my belly is too big.

Lol what a great site, me thinks the author suffers from a touch of Nimbyisms. Perish the thought of moving into the country and having people doing country pursuits there, i guess he is just annoyed that he bought a house that was seemingly quiet then a few years down the line this popped up, now what he should be doing is standing in the garden with a landing net trying to catch any freebies that land on his property for sunday lunch. Kes
This was the subject of a thread some time ago - worth a search - I think it was a woman that started the website and she was a journalist as well. I think it became quite interesting.
