Vince Green
Ebay is not perfect in fact its far from perfect but its there now and it totally dominates, it started at the right time and its gone global. So many people have tried to copy it (hundreds of copycat sites) but they never succeed. Edited June 14, 2013 by Vince Green
aris
Plenty of scope for an eBay competitor- just find a niche market - guns for instance.
Hamster
Yes it has to start as a niche and stop thinking in terms of taking on ebay.
philm
Hi all, looking into setting up an alternative to that site. Software is in place and site won't take classifieds. Would anyone be interested in using it or won't bother Alternative already out there Ebid. http://uk.ebid.net/
rimfire4969
Great idea, but very difficult to do I would think. I would concentrate on what EBay has how band, knifes etc.

pegasus bridge
i'd say if you want to start an auction site that does what ebay doesn't,you need a gun/gun stuff auction site as ebay won't sell firearms and even pull listing for barrels and mods.there might be one already, but i've not found one as yet. agree with this, guns, knives - and various other 'legal but a bit edgy' type stuff that ebay doesnt like to list. and perhaps a section for insect swarms. edit: dont forget the swarms of people in nigerian internet cafe's just waiting for a slight opportunity to do you over. pegleg31
I'm not looking to rival the bay. I am looking at a UK only site that will be based on the reasons bay started On that comment alone I'd say you've made up your mind. I can see where mungler is coming from. Unless you're balls deep into financing it, give it a go it won't hurt you. If you are I hope it works out for you. Good luck in whatever you decide
al4x
The thing worth remembering is ebay pulled out of knife and gun part sales for a very good reason in the uk, by the time you are on the edge of helping people break the law and with a site you can't police that effectively the odds on ending up in court must have scared them. All and sundry on here suggest its the way to go but I wouldn't start a site going for the minority and one where I relied on others to obey the law and punting things through a site I owned

955i
is that it then? Dunno, if it can be proven that it is viable I may go in. This was a test the water post and from the look of it its not worth the cost and hassle, but who knows.

955i
you got to admire people that go in to ventures with big money down, not for the faint heart No pain no gain. I'm not being daft about this, but if the guy can deliver it could be a good venture. Every business is a risk
jasper3
in all honesty its hard when there is something already in place, i believe there is always room for some competition... but !!! it depends on how much you are willing to invest... personally on this one i wouldn't take this option.. don't give in to there is nothing out there.... something will spring to mind
mike-b
Dragons Den??? they would know!!! maybe instead of a ebay auction style site, how about a mail order site that deals in gun parts, knives ect nothing like replica king Arthur swords but collectable knives and Swiss army kind of knives? with a secondary site that is linked you have to register with that can some how prove your over 18 or own a section 2/1 firearms ect? in order to buy? just a thought obviously a lot of outlay n stock but there isnt that much out there were you can get it, plenty that stock pigeon shooting gear but not many that keep extractor claws for a 1187 or replacement chokes etc just a thought! Mungler
Glad to see the OP is sober today It's a timely reminder to me that when someone's got a crack pot idea that hasn't been properly thought out and where there's 20 people already doing it, it's better to smile sweetly, nod and say something banal like 'yeah great idea bud, that sounds amazing' rather than attempt to straighten someone out from a course of action that would with absolute certainty have lead to financial disaster. Yeah you're ******* welcome. I love getting a hard time for telling it how it is, it won't happen again Edit Anyone who encouraged him is either stupid, not in business or on a massive wind up Edited June 14, 2013 by Mungler

Oli
Unless you already own a software development company, employ a shed load of developers with a wide variety of skills and have architecture to support it, with limited funds the only way to kick off something like this is to either be the lucky 1 in a million that has a great idea (like facebook) get it out there and then get the funding to make it scale and re-write the whole thing or design it on paper, protect what you can with patents and then cost it up and either sell it, licence it or approach an angel. Something like an auction site though which has to be pretty reliable, take payments and be 100% available wouldnt really fit the first approach that well. Mungler
Incidentally, whilst my views and advice stretched to nothing more than being sober and applying some common sense (both qualities otherwise missing from last night's "discussion") I would of course take the opportunity of highlighting that I was right. If I was to seek professional advice oh I don't know, from a solicitor perhaps by way of example, being right more often than not might be a quality I would search out, appreciate and perhaps even pay for. Let's just accept the status quo eh! Not sure I would fancy you as my solicitor!! Edited June 14, 2013 by Mungler
Dunkield
Ebid has existed for some time as a direct competitor to eBay, So this raises an interesting point about marketing, I have buying and selling on eBay for 12 year and I have never even heard of Ebid before
